(OAC) By Stacy Gustin Flu season may be winding down, but the timing of flu can be unpredictable and vary from season to season. Because flu season can stretch into early summer, it’s important to know how you and your loved ones can minimize the risk of catching the flu. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends everyone six months and older get a flu vaccine each year. It’s especially important for high-risk groups: children younger than five, pregnant women, the elderly, anyone with a compromised immune system or high risk medical condition and people who live in long-term care facilities. Seasonal flu vaccines reduce transmission rates and have proven effective for decades. When residents of a community such as Arcadia are immunized, the town they live and work in is more protected against an outbreak. How do you tell the difference between a cold and the flu? A cold creeps up on you with milder symptoms: low or no fever, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat and moderate cough. Flu symptoms include a fever of 100 degrees or higher, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, fatigue and weakness. You may not get every symptom, but symptoms appear suddenly. If you think you have the flu – stay home! You need plenty of rest and fluids. Rest can be a hard prescription, especially if you have young children or if you work outside the home, but it’s important to your recovery. Take acetaminophen to control fever. Good health habits can help stop the spread of germs: • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. That’s how viruses are introduced. • Wash your hands often with soap and water to prevent the spread of germs. Alcohol- based hand sanitizers also are effective. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces such as doorknobs, light switches, keyboards and refrigerator handles, at home, work or school, especially when someone is ill. Risk factors that might surprise you: • Worrying too much: Anxiety can manifest itself in a number of ways, so it shouldn’t be surprising that stress can wreak havoc on your immune system. • Hitting the gym: Wipe down machines before using them and take your own mat for stretching.
