Joint pain can occur at any age and is more common in children and young adults than you might think. Inflammation is the most common cause of achy joints. The good news is that inflammation often stems from overuse – exercising, gardening, swinging a golf club, moving furniture or other exertion. Use these top tips to relieve pain: • Take ibuprofen to reduce inflammation in joints and muscles. • Apply heat. However, if you have bruising, ice is best. • Rest. Don’t work or exercise through the pain because it will probably get worse – let your body heal. • Take a hot Epsom salt bath; it works as a natural muscle relaxer. You may feel a little tingling, but that’s normal. • Stretch and gentle massage also help. When you’re starting a new exercise regimen or moving into a new home, remember that pain is typically worse a day or two after exertion than on the day of the activity. Physicians see patients with a wide range of joint pain— from someone with an aching shoulder after a day of yard work to someone who lives for months or years with chronic pain and limited motion. If you’re in an accident, or have a fever or swelling with the pain, seek medical attention. Otherwise, if pain persists for a week or longer accompanied by symptoms including limited motion, popping, clicking, locking or stability problems (such as a knee that feels like it gives out) – see your family physician. Simple X-rays can begin the process of diagnosis. Your doctor will see if osteoarthritis might be causing your joint pain. If fluid builds up in a joint, causing pressure, draining the f luid may be necessary. On occasion, surgery is the best option. If you do need surgery, such as hip or knee replacement, remember that a successful outcome depends on your commitment to physical therapy and rehabilitation, a process that can take five or six months.
