The 41-year-old football coach spends the first half of his day teaching at Ironwood High School, before racing to his car for the 40-minute drive to Arcadia, where he oversees the Arcadia High School football team’s weightlifting activities in the afternoon. “It was important to me to meet these kids and get to know them,” Stillings said. “I’m still finishing up at Ironwood this semester, and they’ve been great about letting me work with Arcadia. Getting the guys into the weight room to get stronger was an immediate goal and they’ve been working like maniacs.” This fall, Stillings will be in Arcadia full- time, as the new head coach of the Titans varsity football team. Stillings spent the past seven seasons coaching at Ironwood, first as a special teams coach before being promoted to defensive coordinator. Stillings replaces Lenny Abt, who spent the last five seasons captaining the Titans. Abt led Arcadia to three winning seasons, including an 8-3 mark and a spot in the Division III playoffs during 2015. But last year was a setback for Arcadia, with the team posting a 2-8 record. One of the most noticeable changes will be a shift in offensive philosophy. Abt ran the Wing-T offense during his time at Arcadia, which employs multiple running backs and can tend to focus on the run game and controlling clock. Stillings will be instituting the spread offense, which means no huddle, typically three or four wide receivers on most plays, all at various tempos. This overhaul may seem like a drastic switch, but Stillings believes there are elements of the Wing-T that will be helpful for current players learning the spread. “There are aspects of the Wing-T run game that you integrate into the spread,” said Stillings. “Some of the running plays can be similar, so the experience of our players will be helpful with that.” Abt put an emphasis on player character during his time at Arcadia, and that won’t change under Stillings, who notes that there are two things that the program will hang their hats on. “First, we will earn our success. Nothing is given,” said Stillings. “We’ll also be following the core values of the program, Titan Pride, with each letter standing for our values. P for perfection, R for relentless effort, I for integrity, D for discipline and E for everyone.
