A staple of the Arcadia neighborhood since its opening in the fall of 1960, Hopi’s renovation project was unanimously approved during a December 13 vote at the Scottsdale Unified School District Governing Board (SUSD) meeting. “Hopi Elementary School, in its current design, has outlived its life cycle, and then some,” said Daniel O’Brien, chief business & operations officer for SUSD. “We’re excited to be able to rebuild Hopi at its current site, starting this summer.” The estimated cost of the infrastructure project will be around $20 million, which will be financed with a portion of the bonds voters authorized SUSD to sell last November. Once the project begins this summer, the plan is for construction during the next 18 months, although an official end date has yet to be set, O’Brien said. “There is no deadline for completion,” O’Brien said. “But, of course, we want to create and deliver a new campus to the Hopi community as soon as possible.” Hunt & Caraway Architects of Phoenix is designing the new school and has already begun its work. A construction company has not yet been selected for the project. “We’ll be doing the rebuilding in phases, probably starting in the back fields,” O’Brien said. “We’ll build something new, move into that new structure, demolish the old structure it replaced, one by one, until it’s all done.” One benefit of the remodel might be alleviation of traffic on Lafayette Blvd. during drop off times in the morning. SUSD will work with the city of Phoenix on the traffic congestion relief plan. The district is also determining what to do with the famous wall of tiles at the school, which contain the names of every student who has ever attended Hopi. “We’re going to take a look at that,” O’Brien said. “We’ll be working with the school and the community to determine what will be done with the wall of tiles.” It appears that Hopi will not be the only Scottsdale elementary school to get a new look, as the voter-approved bond has set the stage for other schools to be renovated in the near future. For now, the focus will be on Hopi. “The Hopi community will get a new, energy-efficient school with up-to-date technology that will deliver great educational opportunities to Hopi students for many years to come,” O’Brien said.
