While Phoenix hasn’t been around as long as some other cities in the United States, there are still restaurants here rich with history and are essential to our local culture. Here are some must-visit restaurant staples in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Cheese N’ Stuff 5042 N. Central Ave. This institution has been piling up deli sandwiches and subs for more than 60 years, with the same iconic neon sign still perched on the shop’s rooftop. Located across from Uptown Plaza on Central Ave., the hole-in- the-wall shop crafts made-to-order hot and cold sandwiches, with more than one million sandwiches served since it opened. Chicago Hamburger Company 3749 E. Indian School Road For more than 40 years, this restaurant has been providing a taste of the Midwest, with charbroiled burgers, Vienna hot dogs, wings, salads, shakes and their famous Original Windy City Sliders. The interior of the restaurant is a shrine to Chicago, with vintage sports memorabilia adorning the walls. Duck & Decanter 1651 E. Camelback Road Since 1972, Duck & Decanter has been a neighborhood favorite. The offerings include classic sandwiches and an assortment of signature sandwiches. The most notable is The Duckling, made with smoked duck breast, smoked turkey, cream cheese, cranberry walnut relish and spicy spring mix on walnut raisin country bread. Not only does D&D serve exceptional gourmet sandwiches, the attached market is the perfect place to find a last-minute gift for housewarming parties and birthdays, or pick up a bottle of wine and easy appetizers. Durant’s 2611 N. Central Ave. Little has changed since this historic Phoenix steakhouse opened more than 65 years ago. This is the kind of place that Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin would have frequented, with dim vintage red lighting, red velvet wallpaper and an entrance through the back kitchen door. It’s the perfect place to indulge in crab cakes, oysters, martinis, and of course, steak. El Chorro 5550 E. Lincoln Dr. There’s a lot of history at El Chorro, which was originally a school built by John C. Lincoln in 1937. A few years later, it was converted into the lodge and restaurant it is today, with guests including Clark Gable and Milton Berle. The property has exceptional views of Camelback Mountain and the surrounding desert landscape. While all of the food and drinks are very high quality, the best reason to make the trip is the famous sticky-buns. Greekfest 1940 E. Camelback Road This authentic taste of Greece has been at 20th Street and Camelback Road for more than 26 years. The menu is loaded with traditional Greek comfort food, from gyros to moussakas to baklava. The atmosphere is cozy and quaint, with large wood beams on the ceiling and elements of copper cookware hung on the walls. Stockyards 5009 E. Washington St. For a bit of Old West charm, stop by Arizona’s original steakhouse. What started as the world’s largest cattle feedlot became The Stockyards Restaurant 30 years later in 1947. Since then, the restaurant has become a go-to destination for a fine steak dinner in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Tee Pee Mexican Restaurant 4144 E. Indian School Road This Arcadia favorite has been in the neighborhood for more than four decades, dishing out authentic Mexican cuisine to generations of families. Any regular patron of Tee Pee will tell you that you can’t dine at the restaurant without ordering one of its famous cheese crisps. TEXAZ Grill 6003 N. 16th St. If it’s fried food you seek, there’s no better place in town. For more than 30 years, TEXAZ Grill has offered classic fare from the Lone Star State, with the most notable being the Chicken Fried Steak. TEXAZ also has some of the best barbeque in town, although it’s only served a few days a week as a special item. The interior is a Texas time capsule, covered wall-to-wall (even ceiling) with license plates, taxidermy, bumper stickers, business cards, neon signs and humorous expressions.
