Instantly, you think heart attack. But what happens when a woman has a heart attack? Same thing, right? In the United States, one in three women dies of heart disease. In fact, it claims the lives of more women than men each year. The problem is, heart disease often goes under- diagnosed and undertreated for women because signs and symptoms are different from those of men. Accordi ng to t he Nat ional Institutes of Health, major symptoms, as much as a month before a heart attack, can include: For women • Unusual fatigue • Sleep disturbance • Shortness of breath • Indigestion • Anxiety For men • Shortness of breath • Weakness • Unusual fatigue • Cold sweat • Dizziness Of course, for both men and women, the basic symptoms of heart attack include chest tightness or pressure and/or pain in the chest, neck, jaw, arms or back. Because women’s heart disease symptoms can be subtler than men’s – particularly when it comes to chest discomfort, rather than chest pain – many women postpone seeing a doctor for their symptoms. These factors make both men and women more at risk for cardiovascular problems: • Smoking • Family history • High cholesterol • Diabetes • High blood pressure • Overweight • Hypertension • Stress • Inactivity Most of cardiovascular deaths are preventable because you can change almost all of the risk factors. You can reduce your risks significantly by quitting smoking, reducing your cholesterol and blood pressure, and adopting a healthier lifestyle that includes good eating habits and regular exercise. February is American Heart Month and 2017 is the year to take control of your heart health. Your primary care physician can help you get on the right track with a diet and exercise program and can help you with strategies to quit smoking. — Claire Bowey, M.D., specializes in family medicine with HonorHealth Medical Group.
