The Civil War and Old West bookstore has been a staple of the area since the 1960s, a unique niche in a world with less bookstores by the day. Now, the store is starting a new chapter, as they headed north to a new location in September. Guidon Books still caters to walk-in business at its new location, 7830 E. Redfield Road, near the crossroads of Hayden and East Redfield Roads. What has changed however, is a new focus on web sales, which have grown in recent years. “We know that we will have customers still find us at our new location, but we will lose some of the foot traffic of Old Town,” said Shelly Dudley, proprietor of Guidon Books. “But, we have customers that come in from everywhere, they come in from San Francisco, from Holland. And much of the market now is online, and they don’t want to go out in the summer heat.” Guidon Books has an extensive collection of new and out of print books on the American Civil War and Western Americana. They also carry collections on Abraham Lincoln and George Armstrong Custer and another section devoted to American Indian History, Arts and Crafts. Looking for a specific book? There’s a good chance that they have it, or know exactly where you can get it. Dudley is carrying on the legacy of her parents with the unique bookstore. Aaron and Ruth Cohen opened the store in 1964, and their love of history ended up being passed on to their daughter. The name Guidon came from a kind of swallowtail flag used by the military to designate specific units. General Custer’s devoted wife Libbie even wrote a book after her husband’s death entitled, Following the Guidon. “I love helping people learn about history,” said Dudley. “Sometimes it’s giving people a book that shows them another side, and sometimes I’m helping people learn about their ancestry. It’s a unique – and amazing – situation.” In addition to running the bookstore, Dudley is also an active participant in the historical culture in Arizona. Dudley and the store help coordinate a Civil War Roundtable, where national speakers come through and share information and stories throughout the Valley. “I think it’s important to continue the tradition of this, getting together with people who are passionate about this, there is nothing better,” said Dudley.
