The object of Pokémon Go is to walk around your neighborhood and community and try to capture as many Pokémon as possible. The app uses the smartphone’s camera to find Pokémon characters in the real world. Once you’ve done that, you can head to different shops, businesses or local parks, and battle your Pokémon with other people. The game gained instant popularity by requiring players to get up and walk, rather than just sitting at home and playing. It is exercise and fun all in one. “My brother played Pokémon as a kid, so I had some knowledge beforehand,” said Pokémon Go player Jordyn Bledsoe. “When Pokémon Go came out, I ended up being kind of obsessed.” Pokémon Go not only benefits those who play the game, but also local businesses. Because businesses are randomly selected to become Pokémon “gyms,” where people could come and play a part of the game (and escape the summertime heat), the businesses also saw a spike in sales during the height of the game’s popularity. Some industries saw an opportunity to bring in more business. If they became a Pokéstop, that signaled to players that Pokémon are sure to be found there. Certain places offered discounts on food and drinks during the summer, as well as a place for Pokémon Go players to get out of the sun and recharge before heading off to the next Pokéstop. Venezia’s Pizzeria offered players a free large one topping pizza if they caught a Pokémon in the restaurant and shared a screenshot of it on Facebook. Not only did some businesses see a spike in sales, but it also offered great exposure and some unintended publicity and marketing. Starbucks saw a rise in sales because of their Pokéstop. People would come in, get a drink, grab a Pokémon, and continue on their way. They even had a Pokémon Frappuccino, a raspberry and blackberry blended treat. Businesses also offered bottles of water to passing Pokémon players or a place to charge their phone after a long day of catching Pokémon. Another way that businesses saw a rise in sales is because of Pokémon “lures.” As the name suggests, a lure was a way to lure Pokémon to a Pokéstop. Once players place a lure, they settle in and for around 30 minutes and are able to catch a plethora of Pokémon. “I would say there were definitely more people coming in and visiting our location,” said Emma Ledford, who works at the Starbucks at Paradise Valley Mall. Pokémon phenomenon makes business boom who play the game, but also local There are hundreds of Pokéstops around Phoenix and several in the Arcadia area. For a full map: https://goo.gl/Dq3pmg.
