Saint Theresa Catholic School Saint Theresa Catholic School By Louis Hagler In January, you may be part of the annual surge in sales of diet products and gym memberships as you attempt to keep your New Year’s resolution to lose weight. Unfortunately, you may be one of many giving up their efforts after a month or two, discouraged by slow progress or overwhelmed by the task. You have to make the commitment to healthy eating habits and physical activity for the long haul. You can’t expect weight to stay off if you go back to eating burgers, pizza and fried foods every night. Here are five tips to help steer you on the path to a long-term, successful weight loss: 1. Set realistic goals: You might expect too much too soon. It’s important to set realistic expectations, such as a one- to two-pound weight loss per week. Despite what the Internet tells you, no quick fix exists for long-term results. 2. Calories in… Fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fat- free or low-fat dairy products are healthy choices. Include protein such as poultry, fish, beans, eggs, nuts and lean meats. Choose foods low in saturated fats, sodium and added sugars. A balanced high-fiber, low-fat diet makes you feel less hungry and helps you maintain blood sugar levels. 3. Calories out: Adding regular physical activity to daily routines. Walking 30 minutes a day is a good start, and if you can work up to an hour a day, that’s even better. The more you exercise, the better you’ll start to feel. 4. There’s an app for that: You can find valuable resources online, from healthy recipe websites to online calorie counting tools. You only have to look as far as your phone – smartphones also offer a wide range of apps to help you lose weight. 5. Be kind to yourself: Remember, you don’t have to be perfect. There will be times when you indulge in a favorite meal or dessert, and that’s OK. As long as you make good choices the majority of the time, you’ll continue to make your way toward reaching — and maintaining — your healthy weight goals. — Louis Hagler, MD, specializes in family medicine with HonorHealth Medical Group. For more: the joint.com/ Arizona/phoenix/arcadia-48011 By Mallory Gleich My Sister’s Closet is a consignment business that first opened their doors in the Town and Country Plaza in Phoenix, at 20th Street and Camelback. This past August, sisters Ann and Jenny Siner celebrated the 25th anniversary of My Sister’s Closet. Both Ann and Jenny were born in Texas and later relocated to Colorado Springs. In the mid-80s, they then headed south to Arizona. Ann received her undergraduate degree at Colorado College with a major in Political Science. She then went to the Thunderbird School of Global Management for a Business degree. After receiving her degree, she landed a Director of Marketing position at PetSmart. While she was on a business trip in Texas, Ann had some time to kill and decided to wander into a local resale shop. She had never been in one before, and noticed that it was a one-of-a-kind experience. When she returned home, Ann called up her sister Jenny and said “if I quit PetSmart, will you go into business with me?” Soon after, My Sister’s Closet began to take form. Jenny was just graduating from Arizona State University when she received the phone call from Ann that would change her life. “I’ve always loved fashion and was always upset at the clothes they made for my age group when I was younger, so I was always going through my sisters’ closets,” Jenny said. “Jenny is very art oriented and I’m very business oriented,” Ann said. The first shop opened in 1991. Now, they have 15 stores in the Scottsdale area and three stores in San Diego. “We really changed the pace of resale shopping,” said Ann. “We’ve raised the bar and set a new standard for the whole industry.” They wanted their shop to turn away from the preconceived notions that resale shops were “dark, dirty and dingy” and turn their shop into “cute, clean and current.” Ann said that since they’ve opened their store it’s become a source of pride for people in the way that they can be proud of the things they’ve bought and the things they’re giving to the resale arena. Their shops contain anything from shoes to shirts, from rings to sunglasses, all from name brands such as Dior, Armani, Burberry and Tiffany and Co. In 1999, the sisters opened My Sister’s Attic, a consignment shop that sells furniture and household items. Ann and Jenny have also taken part in charity work by establishing the My Sister’s Closet Thrift Store. Located in Chandler, this 3,000-square foot store has items that range from $1 to $10. 100 percent of the net profits go to charities such as The Humane Society, The Nature Conservancy, and Fresh Start. Last year, the company donated more than $136,000 to nonprofit organizations. For the future of My Sister’s Closet, Ann and Jenny want to focus more on e-commerce and online sales and possibly more “brick and mortar stores” in different markets. So, what advice does Ann have for potential future business owners? One tip is stepping outside your comfort zone. Ann quoted Eleanor Roosevelt, saying “every day, do something that scares you.” “If you want to start your own business, you have to be ready to overcome adversity and learn to pick yourself up, dust yourself off and sometimes, you’ll have to start over,” she said.
