Coming in to the tournament as the eighth overall seed, first-year Head Coach Jacquelyn Bunker said the team had worked incredibly hard to reach the playoffs, finishing the regular season with a 24-13 overall record. “I am very pleased with how we faired within our 5A division,” Bunker said. “We ended up 13-4 in our division games, which I was really pleased with. As far as the tournament games go, I can coach it a little differently. Since those games don’t count against us, I was able to let them struggle a bit to see if they could bounce back, so the overall record means less to me than the regular season record does.” Senior co-captains Katie Murphy and Katy Tolson thrived in Bunker’s system and said it was their coach’s vision that led the team to sustainable success. “Ever since Jackie came in, it has been a completely different season. From the beginning of the year our goal has been to win State,” Murphy said. “We haven’t been to the playoffs in three years, so having her change the mindset of the program allowed us to grow as volleyball players and as a team.” “This year has been completely different than any other year,” Tolson said. “We really believed in ourselves, and that is because of Coach Jackie.” “At the beginning of the season, she gave us calendars with ‘State Playoffs’ written on it. She told us it was to remind us that through hard work and belief, we can do this, we can make it there,” said Tolson. Both Murphy, who is committed to Furman University to play volleyball, and Tolson, who is considering both the University of Oklahoma and the University of Arizona, said the future of the program is bright for the Lady Titans with Bunker at the helm. “I think these girls will have to step up next season, especially since we have so many seniors leaving (eight). I think there is going to be a change in leadership on the court, but I have total confidence that they can do it,” Tolson said. “Having been on varsity for the past four years, most of these girls have seen both Katy and I grow into this program. Being able to play and practice with them has been able to show them what it’s like to play Arcadia volleyball and I think they can build off of what we accomplished this year,” Murphy said. Going into next season Coach Bunker said she is confident in her returning players and thinks the experience of the playoffs will help the team persevere. “I feel really good, actually, about next year. Yes, we are losing a lot of leadership, but our freshman and junior varsity teams did really well this year.
