It is bittersweet and I can’t help but think how this whole story began. In July of 2010 I quit my job. It was a risky decision. It cut our household income in nearly half and since I hadn’t lined up another position it was clear I would have to drop my lululemon habit (lululemon… so 2010). For an additional plot twist, I found out a week after quitting that I was pregnant with our first baby. The eternal optimist, I wasn’t terrified. I had an idea. Not a plan, but an idea. I would become… a professional storyteller. If the job sounds made up, it is. Telling stories is something I’d been doing since I was a child–in school, at churches, on the speech team, at festivals. When I discovered the MySpace blog feature (yes, MySpace), I posted stories there and a couple people read them. Clearly the next logical step was to make stories my full time profession. So, after quitting my job, I wrote the Arcadia News to see if they needed a storyteller to write a monthly column. Back then, they said no. I wrote the Arizona Republic – they didn’t respond. I took that as a no. I wrote blogs and various magazines. They all said no. I spent much of the rest of 2010 in a nauseous pregnant haze hearing a lot of nos and watching a lot of ‘Ugly Betty ,’ you know, since I didn’t have a job and that was the one luxury we kept: our Netflix subscription. Then in 2011, I decided since I wasn’t making a lot of progress in the tell-MY- stories department, maybe I could help others tell theirs. I teamed up with local charities to use stories to raise funds. I helped an author, then a speaker, then a few CEOs and brands. And somewhere around 2014 I realized maybe my made up job wasn’t about sharing my stories at all… maybe I needed to help others discover the value and importance of telling theirs. Today, that’s what I spend nearly all my time doing. I travel from city to city across the US and globally speaking for companies and conferences about harnessing the power of their stories. The rest of my time is with my family, friends, spin class and you. Though Arcadia News said no in 2010, for the past two years this column has been the one place I get to tell my own stories and I love you for reading them. My greatest hope is that the stories I’ve shared made you remember stories of your own. In a world filled with uncertainty, it is our stories that will bring us together. Who knew a made-up job could turn out to be a real thing and I am very excited for what’s ahead.
