Whether it’s hiding behind a building, down a flight of stairs or through an unmarked door, half the fun of the experience is finding your destination. If you’re seeking that sense of discovery on your next night out, here are some destinations to consider. The Little Woody 4228 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix If you’re not aware of its location, it would be easy to pass right by the building. The entrance is located in the back of the building, and every now and then you’ll hear first-timers say “are we in the right place?” Once inside the dimly lit speakeasy, you’re sure to take in the logs of juniper that are assembled along the walls like a rustic game of Tetris, and tall ceilings with exposed beams. The main room has an assortment of low-slung booth seating and high top tables, as well as a glowing vintage red bar top. In the second room, guests can challenge a friend to a game of skee ball, darts or foosball. Drinks range from cocktails to craft beers to the budget- friendly but daring combo called “The Codger”; a shot of Old Grand-Dad whiskey and a can of Old Style for $5. Dick’s Hideaway 6008 N. 16th St, Phoenix No sign, no problem. Dick’s Hideaway is tucked between two stores on the northwest corner of 16th Street and Bethany Home. Like its sister restaurant, Richardson’s, this rustic establishment is known for its New Mexican cuisine. The atmosphere is cozy and the smell of smoky green chiles permeates throughout the building. The bar is rustic, with a large chalkboard listing the daily specials and details of their acclaimed happy hour. Valley Bar 130 N. Central Ave, Phoenix This watering hole is located in an alley between two skyscrapers on Central Avenue. Once you discover the small glowing neon sign above an unexpected door, your exploration is not quite done, as you must descend down a flight of stairs to the building’s basement. Inside you’ll discover an unassuming music venue full of quirky vintage décor, from funky wallpaper to mid-century furniture. If you’re not feeling the music, guests can partake in shuffleboard, pool, skee ball and video games. Melinda’s Alley 50 E. Adams St, Phoenix The entrance to this bar is also located in an alley in downtown Phoenix, this time in the basement of The Renaissance Hotel. There’s no sign, but if the red light in the alley is turned on, the bar is open for business. Guests can descend down a metal staircase to discover a limited menu that rotates weekly with experimental cocktail creations. Be warned, there’s no beer or wine, it’s strictly cocktails and they only accept cash. But it’s definitely worth it. Honor Amongst Thieves 5538 N. 7th St, Phoenix If you wander behind the new Stock & Stable restaurant near 7th Street and Missouri Avenue, you’ll find a staircase leading to a hidden second story bar. The atmosphere feels very Gatsby-like, with moody stained glass mirrors, along with vintage armchairs scattered throughout. Pick a drink from the expansive menu or ask the bartender to get creative.
