CALL US LAST! Classes available 24/7/365! By Mallory Gleich The temperatures in Arizona are finally dropping and the snow will soon begin to fall. These three resorts offer all the things you need in order to get out and enjoy the winter weather that we Phoenicians deserve after a brutally warm summer! Mount Lemmon Mount Lemmon, located outside of Tucson, is the highest point in the Santa Catalina Mountains. During World War II, a group of men started the Sahuaro Ski Club, and its popularity took off so quickly that Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley has been around ever since. There are 22 ski slopes at Mt. Lemmon; ranging from beginner to expert. Lift tickets range from $15 to $40 depending on age. A military and senior discount is offered. Ski Valley also offers equipment rental, ranging from $20 to $40. They also offer lessons to first timers or those who need a refresher course. For more information on Mt. Lemmon Ski Valley, visit skithelemmon.com. Arizona Snowbowl Arizona’s most well-known winter resort is the Arizona Snowbowl. Located right outside of Flagstaff on the San Francisco Peaks, the Snowbowl is around a two hour drive from Phoenix and 70 miles from the Grand Canyon. It’s been open since 1938 and boasts 777 skiable acres. There are seven chair lifts and 40 trails that skiers and snowboarders can choose from. For those of you who have little to no experience, Snowbowl offers classes for different age groups which range in price depending on age. “I like the fact that it is a very easy day trip from the Valley to get to. I also enjoy the fact that the resort has been doing a lot to try and cater to both skiers and snowboarders; there’s now access to more terrain,” said Scott Covey, who goes to Snowbowl around two to three times a year. If you don’t have equipment, Snowbowl has all the things you need to enjoy a proper winter excursion. Prices range from $10 to $50. Once you’re all geared up, you’ll need a lift pass. Depending on what time of day you decide to hit the slopes (and how old you are), passes range from $40 to $70. “One of the best parts of Snowbowl is that it’s not crazy expensive. The terrain parks and runs are really nice,” said Kevin Verville, an avid snowboarder. After a long day of skiing and snowboarding, Snowbowl also offers lodging for those who don’t feel like driving home. For more information about Arizona Snowbowl, visit arizonasnowbowl.com. Sunrise Ski Resort Located in Greer, which is around four hours outside of Phoenix, Sunrise Ski Resort is made up of three mountains, Sunrise Peak, Cyclone Peak and Apache Peak. The park has been open for more than 40 years and has over 800 acres of skiable area. They have 10 lifts and 65 trails for skiers and snowboarders. “I enjoy these mountains a lot since there is much more terrain that can be covered, and there are more lifts at Sunrise than there are at Snowbowl,” Covey said. “Sunrise has a lot more to explore, especially when there is good snowfall. Plus, it’s bigger (than Snowbowl), so it doesn’t seem to get as crowded,” Verville said. Sunrise also offers classes and equipment rental. Prices vary on age range and time of day. Lodging is also available for those who want to spend a weekend enjoying the snow and scenery. For more information on Sunrise Arizona, visit sunriseskiparkaz.com. Fresh powder!
