Saint Theresa Catholic School Saint Theresa Catholic School By Ira Ungar It’s easy to think you’re safe from the elements once the thermometer shakes off that third digit, but when you’re heading out to explore Arizona’s 40,000 acres of desert mountain parks and preserves, be prepared. Follow these simple tips so you can hit the trails and enjoy the state’s beauty all yearlong: • Never hike alone. Hike with a friend, family member or a group of experienced hikers. • Tell a friend or family member where you’re going, which trail(s) you plan to explore, and when you plan on returning home. • Wear sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat, even on cloudy days. Sunscreen with a minimum of 30 SPF will help protect your skin, especially if you’re hiking in higher elevations where there’s less shade. • Bring plenty of water and salty snacks for both two- and four-legged hikers. • Take several breaks along the way to maintain your energy levels, rehydrate and enjoy the view. • Be aware of sudden weather changes, and bring a rain jacket. Thunderstorms are common in the mountains, and heavy rains can result in creek run-offs and flash floods on trails. • Consider taking a GPS with you if you embark on unknown trails. The desert frequently looks the same and it is easy to get lost. • Stay on marked trails. If you don’t, you may damage the ecosystem and discover areas of ground erosion. You might even come up on a cliff or unexpected drop-off. You also have a much better chance of getting lost or injured when you decide to take the path not traveled. • Listen to your body and know its physical limits. If you have a medical condition such as heart issues; asthma; joint, knee or back problems; or diabetes limit your exertion and exposure to the heat. • Always check with your physician before starting a new exercise plan or embarking on a long or strenuous hike. — Ira Ungar, M.D., specializes in family medicine with HonorHealth Medical Group. The company focuses on restoring natural movement back to the body through individualized massage treatments. Located near Arcadia, Movement Restoration caters to people with restricted movement, compression of joints, tight muscles, or discomfort as a result of repetitive motions and positions from daily activities or jobs. “Everybody is an athlete, and we help them recover from their daily routines or exercise plans,” said Martin. “If you sit at a desk 9 to 5, we customize the treatment plan for that. If you are an Olympic athlete, we customize a treatment plan for that.” Although Movement Restoration works with professional and Olympic athletes, they also treat the general public. And Martin stresses that massage therapy isn’t only for athletes. “One of the biggest misconceptions is that you have to be a serious athlete to benefit from massage therapy services, and the honest answer is that everyone can, and should, seek this type of treatment.” Haws’ background includes more than 15 years of massage therapy experience within chiropractic and wellness practices, award- winning resorts and spas, and elite training facilities catering to professional athletes. Martin is instrumental in the development and growth of Movement Restoration, by directing the day-to-day operations, managing sales and marketing activities, and promoting programs and customer service. Together, the two have assembled a talented team of licensed and certified massage therapists who are dedicated to educating clients about the benefits of integrating massage, exercise and activities into their everyday lives. “While massage is a big part of what we do, it isn’t just about massage,” said Haws. “This is about restoring body movement and making sure people remain healthy and happy. Like Brynn said, everyone is an athlete, so we treat each body the way that benefits them the most.” For more information, visit us at www.movementrestoration.com. Body specialists focus on restoring natural movement BEHIND THE BUSINESS BUSINESS BRIEFS Sipping on summer all year long While the Valley is cooling down as fall approaches, a local company wants everyone to keep a little bit of summer alive with a twist on pre-mixed beverages. Coco 21, founded locally by Brian Kaplan, offers a unique line of premium ready-to-serve cocktails made with coconut water and vodka. “I had this idea a few years ago. A lot of people are drinking coconut water and mixing it with spirits, and it surprised me to find that no one had created a ready-to-drink product like this before,” said Kaplan, who grew up in Phoenix and attended the University of Arizona. “A buddy of mine came back from a vacation in Brazil and also mentioned that this is what everyone was drinking, so I thought, why not bring this product to the public?” For more information visit drinkcoco21.com.
