With our iPhones constantly ringing, emails piling up in our inbox, kids yelling for a snack as soon as they get home from school, and the boss wanting the report done by 6 p.m., life can get a little stressful. So, what is your go-to when it’s time to relax? A glass of wine? Maybe a massage? Barbara St. John and Chris Arians have a different idea. St. John is an award winning therapist and author, who has spent years helping people through various techniques and seminars. Arians is the wife of Arizona Cardinals Head Coach Bruce Arians. Together, they created The Zone. At first glance, The Zone looks like a massive box. Crafted from high-resolution wood, the same used for pianos, and fitted with soft lighting, guests are transported to a world of quiet relaxation. “What you’re doing is retraining and reprogramming your brain to relax, which is something we don’t know how to do,” St. John said. Guests lay on a massage-type mattress and are enclosed in the box. They choose a script, prerecorded by St. John, to listen to while they relax. There are over 33 scripts to choose from, each tailored to a different subject, such as stress, motivation, relaxation or focus. There are even scripts specifically for golfers to help them relax before or after hitting the links. When The Zone first started, guests lay in the box and listened to soft music. But St. John noticed that guests had a hard time getting comfortable without having something to focus on. This is where the scripts came in. “We found that the scripts occupy the conscious brain, because the brain needs something to entertain itself. The voice is a kind of guide to help the brain relax,” St. John said. St. John explained that science tells us the number one cause of disease is stress. The unconscious brain carries trauma from the past and uncertainty of the future, which can cause anxiety and tension. The Zone is a way to live in the now. Patti Milligan, who is a registered dietitian and has used The Zone multiple times, said it works with the body on subtle healing and allows the body to choose how to heal, as opposed to drug or other therapies that dictate a mode of action. “I am trained to work in the science realm, so I was a bit skeptical at first, but it truly was the most profound experience. I was shocked at how deeply calm and balanced I felt after that first session,” Milligan said. In addition to being used as a way to unwind and relax, The Zone also helps individuals who suffer from illnesses or health problems. Melissa Grenley suffers from arthritis and fibromyalgia, and has integrated The Zone into her health routine as part of her treatment. “The Zone helps with my muscle aches and the overall pain is remarkably less. I sleep in a deeper, uninterrupted sleep when I have a Zone treatment,” Grenley said. If relaxation and quiet hasn’t piqued your interest quite yet, here is another fact about The Zone: All of the money and net proceeds from the business go straight to Court Appointed Special Advocates. CASA is like a Big Brother, Big Sister program in the Valley. It helps kids in foster care receive the appropriate care they need. With the holidays approaching, increased stress could be right around the corner. Packages of three sessions are $299. For more information, visit relaxinthezone.com or call 480-729-6228.
