While these events are a great reason to appreciate some of Arizona’s culinary standouts, what’s often overlooked is that these events are rooted in philanthropy and support those in need. One such event is the 2016 Slider Throwdown, which benefits the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation and will take place on Sunday, November 13 from 12 p.m. – 3 p.m. at Kierland Commons in Scottsdale. At $25 per person, those attending the event can taste a selection of ten different sliders, bid on a variety of silent auction items and contribute to the community, as 100% of proceeds will go directly to a 501(c)(3) organization that helps 18,000 children who are currently in foster care in Arizona. “The event started four years ago and was originally called Foodie Faire for Foster Care,” said Susie Timm, the organizer of the event. “We changed the name to Slider Throwdown last year and made it a competition between food trucks, in order to up the excitement and engagement of our attendees.” The ten food trucks participating in the fundraiser will compete for two “Best Slider” awards. The first is a people’s choice award with votes cast by every guest in attendance, while the other is an award from a panel of local slider experts. The contenders for the title include Phil the Grill, One True Love, Aioli Burger, Buzz N Bee, Butta Burger and Spice It Up. A cash bar will be available to guests as well. “This is a fun way to taste sliders of all kinds from some of the very best food trucks in Phoenix and do it for a truly awesome cause,” said Timm. “The money earned will help give foster kids the chance at a normal childhood; piano lessons, summer camp, Disney World and more. It’s an amazing non-profit and I am honored to work with these people.” The mission of the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation is to provide those in foster care with quality childhood experiences. The non-profit organization has raised more than $5.7 million, which has enriched the lives of over 26,000 children living in foster care. “We help these children through difficult circumstances by providing them with resources and allowing them to take part in enjoyable activities that promote self- esteem,” said Kris Jacober, Director of the Arizona Friends of Foster Children Foundation.
