EMERGENCY SERVICE By Dr. Janette Reeves It’s natural to be concerned if you’ve found a lump in your breast. However, the good news is that 80 percent of all breast lumps are benign. Women find most lumps without medical assistance, usually through a monthly breast self-exam. Other lumps are found during routine breast exams by a health care professional and through mammograms, which is a special X-ray of the breast tissue. October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month, but don’t put off checking for a lump only when October rolls around. When cancer is detected at an early stage and treated quickly, the outlook is excellent. Most women will be breast cancer free for the rest of their lives. AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION What can you do at home? Doctors recommend that you perform a monthly breast self-exam so you’re aware of what feels normal. The best time to do this is after the menstrual cycle when lumps are easier to feel. While performing a breast self-exam, lookout for anything abnormal: • A lump that doesn’t go away after your period or feels like a rock in your breast tissue. • Changes in skin on the breast. • Nipple discharge or inversion. If you notice anything abnormal, see your doctor right away. It’s recommended that women from the ages of 40 to 44 start annual mammogram screenings. The risks and potential benefits of screening should be considered. Talk to your doctor to determine the best schedule for your screenings, which may vary based on your family medical history or any other increased risk factors. GET HEALTHY, STAY HEALTHY Maintaining a healthy weight is key to disease prevention, including breast cancer. This includes exercising for an hour five days a week and eating a low-fat diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Doctors also recommend reducing your alcohol intake since alcohol may increase the risk of breast cancer. Remember, early detection of breast cancer comes with better treatment options. Stay aware of what’s normal for you, contact your doctor if something doesn’t seem quite right, and see your doctor for regular screenings. — Janette Reeves, D.O., is a family medicine physician at HonorHealth Medical Group. Page 7 October 2016 GENERAL ELECTION NOVEMBER 8 TH Representation with Results It has been an honor to serve as your State Representative for six years. As of today, Arizona’s economy is stronger and we are focusing on our most important resource – our children. My legislative accomplishments include providing life-saving care to over 300 uninsured women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer. I sponsored legislation creating the Department of Child Safety with the sole mission of protecting Arizona’s children. Last session, I brought KidsCare to the House members for a vote, we passed it and the Governor signed it! After spending more than seven years as a television news anchor in Phoenix and San Diego, Bubeck shifted her focus to being a full-time mom to two adorable boys, Nicholas and Zachary. Unable to keep her passion for motherhood to herself, Bubeck began blending her love of storytelling with her passion for “all things mama,” authoring a book, launching a business and even starting a clothing line. Arcadia News sat down with Bubeck to learn more about this mompreneur . AN: How did your company, All Things Mama, start? NB: I thought it would be fun to start a blog-type website for fellow boy mamas. It’s a great outlet for me to share insight on products I love, especially gear, toys and fashion fit for your little man. The website also includes a travel section, boy mama gallery and select videos from our sister site, All Things Mama TV, which highlights products and parenting trends. AN: What are three must-have items trending this season? NB: For new moms, Momsense, is an excellent nursing aid. Many new moms stop nursing because they fear their newborn isn’t eating enough. This digital breastfeeding meter puts mom’s mind at ease, providing mothers with real-time knowledge of their baby’s milk intake and nursing habits using Momsense earphones, a smartphone and app. With a price point under $100, it’s a great buy. There are many amazing diaper bags to choose from, but the Ebby Diaper Bag is my new fab find. Its classic and functional design makes the Ebby an ideal carryall for moms, featuring multiple exterior pockets that are ideal for storing bottles, diapers and wipes. My diaper bag has become a ‘Mompreneur’ turns her motherhood into a charitable business BEHIND THE BUSINESS purse, so it’s nice to have a versatile bag that can be dressed up. The faux leather bag is available in black and taupe for about $70. Shape Mags are my toddler’s latest obsession. These colorful, magnetic tiles are a modern twist on building blocks. They are great for helping your child develop fine motor skills, and will keep your child happily entertained and stimulated. This is a toy I really, truly love. Shape Mags are available at most major retailers starting around $30. AN: What’s the best way to capture photos of kids, perhaps ones that are even worthy of making it on holiday cards? NB: Surrender perfection. I love a good professional photoshoot, but I’ve come to realize that my favorite photographs aren’t forced. I’ll do anything to get my kids to look and smile at the camera at the same time, but often it’s the candid shots that turn out best. There are so many ways to put together holiday cards. I suggest picking pictures that best depict your everyday life. But if you want that family money shot – which most moms do – a little bribery never hurts. AN: You recently launched Mama B. Designs. Tell us about it. NB: I love fashion, but ever since becoming a mom, my stiletto and dress attire has transitioned to yoga clothes (and I don’t workout). So, I wanted to create cool and comfortable tanks, tops and tees for men, women and children. Our mission is all about giving back. We are official partners with March of Dimes, a foundation dear to my heart, as my first born was premature. Our Mama B. Miracle Line directly benefits the foundation, as we donate 50 percent of the retail price per each item sold. We aim to stylishly spread prematurity awareness. It’s simple: Buy a shirt; believe in miracles. From a personal standpoint, my boys are the inspiration for Mama B. Designs. I want to make them proud. I want to instill in them the drive to pursue their dreams. I want to be that mama that can “mother” as well as run a business. For more info, visit mamabdesigns.com. Nadine Bubeck’s sons, Nicholas and Zachary, are the inspiration for Mama B. Designs.
