Redefining Swim Lessons since 1998 By Christian Thurley The Xavier Prep volleyball team seeks redemption following a bitter defeat in last year’s state championship game. Xavier’s quest of capturing its 12th volleyball state championship in school history eluded the Gators last fall, losing to No. 1 seed and two- time defending state champion Desert Vista, 18-25, 32-30, 25-19, 25-14. The Gators finished their 2015 season with a 34-8 record. “Everyone that came back has a lot of experience and knows what it takes to reach the state championship,” said Gator Coach Lamar Bryant. “A little extra effort will get us over the hump, so we’re going to use it as motivation.” The Gators will have to bounce back this season without the leadership of Gatorade National Volleyball Player of the Year and current USC Trojan, Khalia Lanier. Lanier finished the 2015 campaign with staggering numbers: 496 kills, 324 digs and 28 service aces, per MaxPrep Sports. Along with Lanier, the Gators will also be without All-Americans Callie Jones and Kristen Largay. Instead, the Gators will turn to the leadership of returning four-time varsity athlete Makena Patterson and captains Emma Cisneros- Luebke, Emma Gelinas and Lanie Wagner. Another bright spot on the deep and talented Gators roster is sophomore Shannon Shields. Shields stepped up big as a freshman, filling the role of setter while Callie Jones went down with an injury. “Both Lanie [Wagner] and I are pretty big leaders,” said Patterson, a middle blocker. “We have been on varsity since our freshman year, we know how it runs and we have had the opportunity to see other leadership styles and we know what is going to work.” Xavier will have plenty of opportunities to prove its worth as one of the elite teams in Arizona as they take the court with top teams across the country. The team’s first test took place September 16 and 17 at the Durango Fall Classic in Las Vegas. Xavier took fifth place at the event last year and improved by going all the way to the championship game this time. The event featured 10 of the top 25 teams in MaxPrep’s Xcellent 25 rankings. “You don’t really know what you’ll face on the other side of the net in the Durango Fall Classic,” said Wagner, a junior outside hitter. “In Vegas you have to bring your A-game because you don’t know what to expect from your opponents.” The Gators have the Nike Tournament of Champions circled on their calendar as well, where they placed second in the gold bracket in 2015. Nike’s Tournament of Champions will feature eight of the top 25 teams in MaxPrep’s Xcellent 25 rankings and will take place from September 30 to October 1. No. 1 Sacred Heart Academy and No. 2 Mater Dei of Santa Ana, California, will battle with Xavier. Reigning champion Jesuit High School of Portland, Oregon will not attend the tournament this year. Other notable matches for Xavier include two late-season matchups against Hamilton, the Gilbert Invitational and the state tournament. The Gators opened up their 2016 volleyball season by dominating Mountain View High School 25-14, 25-6, 25-17 on August 30. Sophomore defensive specialist Ashley Yeung was named player of the match.
