AARP estimates that about 8,000 Americans celebrate their 65th birthday every day, so you are not alone in being overwhelmed with the concerns that come with all those candles. In Arcadia, we are fortunate to have The Area Agency on Aging and its network of more than 50 services and programs as a resource. Staff members refer to the company’s 24- Hour Senior Helpline as their “first resource,” saying they receive about 36,000 calls asking for information per year from older adults, family members, friends and other agencies. That number is 602-264-HELP (4357). Their office is located near Arcadia at 1366 E. Thomas Road if you want to visit in person. You can stop by to pick up informative materials, or you may want to make an appointment with one of their representatives for a one-on-one meeting. The office phone number is 602-264-2255. The Agency website, aaaphx.org, has a complete listing of available programs and services as well as information about upcoming events and classes. As we enter the season for Medicare program open enrollment, the Benefits Assistance Program with its free personalized help will be in demand. Director of Care Coordination, Scott Hawthornthwaite emphasized that participants receive, “completely unbiased information. Counselors do not sell and will not recommend one product over another. Their only goal is to help clients make informed decisions.” Trained counselors are available by appointment at sites all over Maricopa County. Our own Devonshire Senior Center at 2802 E.
