In Arizona, there are a number of fundraising programs held annually and year-round by national as well as local charities to raise awareness about breast cancer and help those affected by the disease. Five years ago, 15-year-old Dash McDonald became involved with one of these local charities when he participated in one of their flash mobs, a type of group dancing in public. McDonald’s mom knew founder Holly Rose from her own experience battling breast cancer, and she encouraged him to dance in the flash mob. McDonald has always enjoyed expressing himself through movement, so he was eager to use his passion to benefit such an important cause. “My mom knew about a local nonprofit called Don’t be a Chump! Check for a Lump! that was putting on a dance flash mob. I always loved dancing and thought it was for a fantastic cause, so I decided to do it,” said McDonald. Since then, McDonald continues to work for the charity as a dancer and event photographer. I donate my time to help with their walks and have raised money to help purchase wigs for those in need,” said McDonald. According to its website, one of the primary goals of Don’t be a Chump! Check for a Lump! is to provide breast cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment with wigs free of cost. Between 2009 and 2015, the non-profit provided over 700 women with custom wigs through its Wig Out program, which allows women to select their own wig from a local shop. The Wig Out gala occurs annually and acts as a fundraiser for both the Wig Out program and the breast cancer prevention education program, which strives to motivate women to know the facts about breast cancer and perform regular checks. McDonald said he plans to continue using his dance and photography skills to benefit the programs and goals of the nonprofit. He hopes to increase awareness surrounding the reality of a breast cancer diagnosis, in addition to promoting techniques for prevention and early diagnosis of the disease. “I would love for people to recognize the true risks associated with breast cancer,” said McDonald.
