To help those in need, the group knits and crochets beautiful shawls and says a prayer over the shawls before delivering them to hospital patients, troubled families and more. The prayer shawl movement has spread through parishes, ministries and community groups throughout America since 1998, encouraging people to create special shawls that are often blessed by the priest before gifted to people who need a boost in spirits. The St. Francis Xavier chapter began in 2006 with the help of Rose Ritter, an active parishioner who heard about the prayer shawl movement through a friend. The word quickly spread, and the group’s members have been knitting and warming the lives of others ever since. Most of the knitting and crocheting work is done on the members’ personal time at home, and at the monthly meetings the members bring in the shawls they’ve made. The ladies display the shawls on the table and say a prayer over them. Many times, the priest will stop by to bless the shawls. The meeting is more of a bonding experience than anything else, as the women discuss their shawls and the situations of the recipients over tea and crumpets. The members, who range in age from 20 to 80, find people in need through their network of family, friends and parishioners. The women also visit hospitals and deliver shawls to new mothers, with delicate, miniature shawls for premature or sick newborns. The group does their best to share their work with others and encourage them to get involved, including the younger parishioners. They visited the second-grade class at St. Francis to present two special teachers with shawls, an experience that showed the students an example of caring for others and making a difference. “They all wrote notes afterwards, recommending the people that they thought should have a prayer shawl,” Ritter said. The best part of the project for Ritter is bringing people together and forming close relationships. “The shawls are the force that binds the women together and helps them become such good friends,” she said. “I feel that this was the greatest thing that I have ever volunteered to do. It’s a win-win situation for both the recipient and myself, because I’ve enjoyed making someone else happy and bringing comfort to them.” Neva Smith, a receptionist at St. Francis, said the prayer shawl chapter is a wonderful resource for their parish. “The prayer shawl ministry has been such a comfort for our parishioners, as well as many people outside of our parish, making them feel loved, especially when they have lost a loved one or have a loved one who is very ill.” Liz Hansen, the parish manager at St. Francis, said that the shawls are a wonderful gift. “I have been blessed to receive one of the handmade prayer shawls, and I will treasure the gift always. The shawls are a physical reminder of God’s grace, lovingly made by hand, and provide compassion, love and understanding for a person in need.” Prayer shawls encourage friendship and hope Rose Ritter
