SATURDAY, OCTOBER 1 Wiener Mania Invitational 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Papago Park Softball Field, 1300 N. College Road, Tempe. If you’re a dog lover, then this is one event you won’t want to miss. Come out to Papago Park and watch as the top 32 racing wiener dogs compete in a 50-yard racetrack for the top prize. Happy Tails Dachshund Rescue will be on-site with a few dogs looking for forever homes. There will also be vendors with merchandise, food and drinks. This event is $2 per person and kids get in free. Showcasing some of the best local cuisine that Phoenix has to offer, Valley restaurants come together to highlight one thing: the chili pepper. The event will include on-site chili roasting, cooking demos, music, dancing, activities and a talent show. Winners for the best chili pepper dish and best salsa will be announced, along with the crowning of the Chile Pepper Queen. Arizona Cancer Village Fun Run 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Steele Indian School Park, 300 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in the spirit of support, Arizona Cancer Village is hosting a 5K fun run to provide support for Arizona’s cancer community. Bring the family and run or walk in the 5K or 1 mile, check out local craft vendors, listen to live music or grab a bite from local food trucks. Cancer resource booths will be on-site with information about cancer awareness and resources for cancer patients and their families. FRIDAY, OCTOBER 7 Pumpkin and Chili Party 10 a.m. at Schnepf Farms, 24810 S. Rittenhouse Road, Queen Creek. Start your fall off right with a visit to the pumpkin patch at Schnepf Farms. This recurring event boasts a 4-acre corn maze, pig races, hayrides and delicious SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9 Race for the Cure 6:45 a.m. at the Cesar Chavez Plaza, at Fourth Avenue and Washington in downtown Phoenix. Come out and run for the cure at the Susan G. Komen Race for Breast Cancer. There is an option to do the 1-mile run, the Breast Cancer Survivor’s 5K run, a competitive 5K, or a 5K walk. The race finishes west of Fifth Avenue and Jefferson. Race awards will be announced at 10 a.m. Registration includes a T-shirt. Registration fees vary. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13 Candidate Accountability Session 6:30 p.m. at Shepherd of the Hills United Church of Christ, 5524 E Lafayette Blvd, Phoenix. The Valley Interfaith project is holding a non-partisan event where citizens can ask questions to local elected officials and candidates. Those attending will include District 28 members of the House and Senate, two members of the Maricopa County Community College Board, Maricopa County Sheriff Paul Penzone and three officials from the Arizona Corporation Commission. Attendees will have the chance to sample authentic Greek foods like Saganaki (flaming cheese!), shop at the Agora for food, jewelry and artwork, and listen and learn to dance “like a Greek”. Osborn Road, Scottsdale. Get ready for a family friendly event like no other. Family Promise of greater Phoenix presents this year’s Cardboard City, a festival of games and activities made out of cardboard. Operated by Family Promise and Valley youth, there will be music, dancing, food trucks, a photo booth and more. Attendees are invited to spend the night at Scottsdale stadium in their very own cardboard house, with breakfast provided in the morning. There will be live music and dancing, lucha libre wrestling, a tequila expo, eating contests, a kids zone and even a Chihuahua beauty pageant. Take a hayride to the pumpkin patch and pick out the perfect pumpkin. Washington St., Phoenix. Benefitting the Arizona Department of Health Service’s Fit at Fifty program, and supporting the Colon Cancer Alliance, the Undy Run is set for October 22. Participants will bare almost all by wearing boxers or briefs and running or walking a 5K through the streets of Phoenix. Dress up in your tighty whities or costumes and come out to support awareness of colon cancer. There is also a 1-mile fun run option and an awards ceremony at the end of the race.
