NOW By Jeannine Hinds The FDA recently announced that it would regulate all tobacco products, including electronic or e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are battery-operated devices that resemble traditional cigarettes. But instead of burning tobacco, they contain cartridges filled with nicotine and other harmful substances. When lit, the liquid chemicals in the cartridge turn into a steam or vapor inhaled by the smoker. The concentrations of chemicals, including nicotine, vary based on the manufacturer. Despite being marketed as a “healthier” alternative to traditional cigarettes, e-cigarettes are still a relatively new product, and data about their health effects continue to be under review. Although the use of regular cigarettes among youth has seen a significant decline, e-cigarettes and the use of other tobacco products continue to climb. Here are five hidden dangers of e-cigarettes: • E-cigarettes are electronic delivery systems that contain nicotine. Nicotine is an addictive stimulant that causes heart, liver and lung disease as well as many types of cancer. • E-cigarettes that claim not to contain nicotine have other dangerous and toxic chemicals like formaldehyde and propylene glycol. They’re harmful to those who are vaping and to victims of secondhand vaping. • With e-cigarettes, more and more young people and previous nonsmokers are exposed to chemicals causing harm and disease in e-cigarettes. • Liquid nicotine is extremely toxic. As little as half a teaspoon can be fatal if ingested by an average-sized toddler. • E-cigarettes exchange one addiction for another. Talk to your primary care physician to find out more about smoking cessation programs in your neighborhood. If you stop smoking, you greatly reduce your risk for disease and early death. COMING SEPTEMBER 6 TH By Kelly Potts In 2013, Arcadia resident Laura Kiel was living in Chicago, climbing the corporate ladder and making the best of her day-to-day tasks. She wasn’t unhappy, but she wasn’t entirely satisfied. When she was suddenly presented with a major career change, which would move her to the west coast, Kiel decided the move could be beneficial to her overall life. With such a big move, Kiel looked for positive reinforcements anywhere she could find them, through books, blogs and daily reminders, to keep her inspired and motivated within the adjustments of her life. “Change is hard.
