By Ian Kraft In July, the Arizona Storm 12U volleyball team took third place in the USA Volleyball Girls’ Junior National Championships, held in Indianapolis, Indiana from June 24 through July 3. In their field, they played teams from the entire United States as well as Puerto Rico. Three of the players on the Arizona Storm team are from Arcadia. Lauren Sullivan and McKenna Douglas attend St. Theresa Catholic School, and Annabel Wentworth goes to St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School. Even though all live within 15 minutes of one another, volleyball is what finally brought them together. “It was really funny to see how quickly Lauren, McKenna and I went from sort-of enemies to the best of friends,” exclaimed Wentworth. “I loved having them on my team, and it is going to be weird to face them in the upcoming season.” Wentworth, 12, says she plans on attending Sunnyslope High School in Phoenix when she graduates from St. Thomas, but she will never forget the time she had in Indianapolis. “Playing teams from all over the country was amazing, but realizing that our team really is among the best of the best is the most memorable thing about the Indy experience,” said Wentworth. Both Wentworth and Douglas said they were thrilled to have received the bronze medal, but are eager for next summer so they can go for gold once more. “It is amazing to be known as the third- best team in the country, but we want to be number one. I know we all really want to earn that gold medal next year,” said Douglas. To which Wentworth added, “Gold is always the goal. I think we need to work hard and just grow a few inches and we can do it.” The third piece of the Arcadian triumvirate, Sullivan, said she is eager to get back to the court so she can train for next summer’s games. “I have a lot of pride when it comes to how we did in Indianapolis, but I know we all want to win so badly and prove ourselves as the best. We all know we have what it takes, and next year? We’ll be ready,” Sullivan insisted. After this experience, the girls all agree that through volleyball, their friendships will never fade completely. “Volleyball is a great way to meet new girls,” Sullivan said. “We spent a lot of time together this summer and became really good friends.” Wentworth, who was sidelined with an ankle injury throughout the tournament, said she loved having two friends from the same neighborhood because they were all in it together and both Sullivan and Douglas were extremely supportive of her, even when she was unable to help her team on the court.
