Neither student knew they were about to receive Arcadia High School’s most prestigious award. The Mr. and Ms. Olympian awards are given to the male and female student who made contributions to the AHS community with their selflessness and leadership. “When you arrive at the ceremony, you grab a program and find your seat. So, that is what I did,” said Byron, the winner of the Mr. Olympian award. “I f lipped through [the program] and didn’t see my name anywhere until I finally got to the last page, and there I was…Mr. Olympian.” Byron said he was completely surprised to see his name there, but was even more excited to see his good friend Nina’s name next to his. “She’s great. Super intelligent. I was so happy she won Ms. Olympian.” Vuletic, however, did not take one of the programs at the door as she was more focused on finding her seat. “Actually, I had no idea I had won until Graham came up to show me. I was in disbelief. It was a huge surprise and I was at a loss for words,” said Vuletic. Both Vuletic and Byron exemplified what AHS strives for in terms of academic success, as they posted 4.1 and 4.5 weighted GPAs respectively, but Principal Nathan Slater said it was more than their intelligence that made them valuable members of the Arcadia community. “Graham and Nina are two of the most amazing individuals that I have ever had an opportunity to work with in my 22 years at the high school,” Slater said. “Both are exceptional students but even better people. Their actions always spoke louder than their words and when something positive was happening on campus, Nina and/or Graham were close by. It was an honor to get to know them and I know that I am a better person because of my interactions with each of them,” said Slater. Conversely, both Vuletic and Byron cited Slater as one of their biggest inf luences throughout their high school careers. Byron called Slater, “someone I truly admire and look up to,” while Vuletic said he was “super helpful all the time and was always supportive of what I wanted to do both on and off campus.” With all of their academic success, both Vuletic and Byron were offered scholarships to multiple colleges across the country. Vuletic decided to study mechanical engineering at Biola University in La Mirada, California, while Byron chose the University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington. Byron is undecided with his major, but said he is interested in business management as well as engineering. “Winning Ms. Olympian meant everything to me,” Vuletic said. “I am excited to go to California and represent Arcadia the best I can.” Academic standouts win Mr. and Ms. Olympian awards Nina Vuletic and Graham Byron.
