As they were seated, his two young children received crayons to help pass the time and keep them occupied while waiting for their food. Like most families, the Wares had experienced this routine many times before, but something was different for Ware at this meal. “What happens to these crayons after we leave if we don’t take them,” Ware asked their server. The server explained that slightly used and even untouched crayons had to be thrown away. Ware, who has a background in manufacturing and supply chain and a passion for art, took the crayons from the restaurant home that night, determined to find a way to recycle the waxy supplies Being that his mother was a teacher and his wife is a teacher, his initial intentions were to recycle the crayons by giving them to art programs in schools. But when politics prevented him from pursuing this path, he shared the idea with a friend, who is a child life specialist at a large pediatric hospital He decided children’s hospitals were a perfect fit for the recycled crayons, as their art programs are used to alleviate anxiety, provide psychological support, and offer outlets for self-expression. Ware established The Crayon Initiative, a 501(c)(3), in 2014, the same year he created a prototype of the molds that remanufactures unwanted crayons. Since then, he has connected with the Children’s Hospital Association, which represents more than 200 children’s hospitals across the country. Today, The Crayon Initiative is in 35 hospitals in 12 states, including Phoenix Children’s Hospital and Cardon Children’s Medical Center in Mesa. To collect crayons, Ware works with organizations, such as AAA, for corporate collection and recycling events. He also created collection boxes to house in schools and restaurants. “At first we would send boxes to servers who were searching for ways to recycle crayons online,” Ware said. “Now we have the corporate guys – Landry’s Restaurants, Darden Restaurants, Brinker International, IHOP – wanting to do it nationally.” In addition to collection efforts, the nonprofit also accepts cash donations to help fund crayon manufacturing, collection drives, future grants for art programs, and to cover shipping costs. In two years, The Crayon Initiative has collected more than 40,000 pounds of unwanted crayons and has donated more than 15,000 packs of crayons to children’s hospitals. “I still have the crayons on my desk from that dinner,” Ware said. “My goal is to be making millions of packs of crayons on an annual basis.
