Wink 24 was founded by husband and wife team Ruggero and Fernanda Borletti. The menu draws inspiration from Fernanda’s Mexican roots and Ruggero’s native Italy. “Including our culture into our cuisine was important for us to have incorporated in the restaurant,” said Fernanda. “We wanted something that represented us, and the foods we love, and that bring us together as a family.” Fernanda’s love of cooking and past experience working as a server when she was a young adult led to her longing for a restaurant to call her own. One day, it was as if the stars aligned and she found the space she had always dreamed of. “We were walking the Biltmore and I found this little space, and it was perfect. So, I talked to my husband and we decided that this was the perfect time,” said Fernanda. The interior of Wink 24 has just as much character as the owners; the space is brightly designed with splashes of intense green, orange and magenta. “A wink is an experience shared between people – a secret message, much like a drink or a meal – but it transcends relationships, age and more. Our menu is simple, relatable and meant to be shared – much like a simple wink,” she said. “It’s the reason we all get together: a good meal with good people and good intentions.” The menu focuses on local ingredients, with breads being made in the kitchen every day. With dishes like handcrafted pizzas, crostinis and exceptional salads, there is something for everyone on this menu. “How do we open an Italian-inspired restaurant without pizza?” Fernanda said. “The pizza oven was already in place when we took the space over, so that helped us reel in our menu a bit. Pizza is a big focus, but we are proud of everything we have created in this space.” Wink 24 is located at Biltmore Fashion Park between Seasons 52 and Stingray Sushi. Wink 24 is open daily from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Get more information at wink24.net. By Riley Kissee Chestnut Fine Food and Provisions has been a popular breakfast destination in Phoenix for several years. However, in the last few months, Chestnut has decided to shake things up a bit. After the doors close at 3 p.m. on Thursdays, the night begins for the establishment, but under a different moniker: Water Chestnut. The evening concept is in a partnership with Chef Jared Lupin, formerly of Umami in Tempe. The Pan-Asian style menu has a selection of small plates and inspired cocktails, but the showstopper is the ramen. “When Umami closed in December, I reached out to the previous owner to see if we could do some sort of collaboration,” said Kirsten Steele, co-owner of Water Chestnut. “Unfortunately the timing wasn’t exactly right, but we reconnected about three months ago and finalized a menu for what we think is a witty and fun take on Chestnut: Water Chestnut.” The ramen begins with a selection of broth, either vegan shio, garlic pork miso or pork shoyu. This is followed by a choice of noodle: house ramen, rice noodle or buckwheat soba. Next guests can pick their protein, which includes barbecue pork, roast duck, chicken katsu, Chinese pork sausage or tofu. And to finish the bowl, there’s an assortment of traditional toppings such as a soft egg, seaweed, naruto, as well as sweet corn, garlic spinach and more. The small plates are enjoyable, such as savory bao steamed buns filled with a choice of roast duck or short rib, flash fried beef potstickers or spicy pickled cucumber. And if you save room for dessert, you’ll be glad you did with options such as mango sticky rice, matcha green tea ice cream or a house-made Popsicle. What’s more, Water Chestnut is a fine place to sip on a craft cocktail. The Asian- inspired cocktails include the “Tiger Mom,” made with Tito’s vodka, mango, vanilla syrup, rice milk, coconut cream and ice, or “A Doctor, a Lawyer, or an Engineer” made with gin, elderf lower liqueur, ginger, cucumber and basil. “Water Chestnut brings something very different to the corner, with a fun Asian- focused menu to twist things up a bit,” said Steele. “We are very excited as the season changes and it cools off to see our guests enjoying warm, filling bowls of ramen on the patio.” Water Chestnut serves ramen every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening starting at 5 p.m. until the food runs out.
