Now, she has the opportunity to share her love with her husband, Steve, and two sons, Scott and Tommy. “I have always had a passion for adventure,” Ledyard said. “I moved to Arcadia when I was 12 years old and every summer my mom used to pack us up and drive to new places. “My job on these trips was to be the map navigator. I loved reading the maps, and since there was no Google Maps at this time, it was really important,” Ledyard said. “It was from these trips that I found my love for travel.” Roughly 10 years ago, Ledyard set a goal that she would travel to the remainder of the 50 states she had not already visited, and in doing so, hopefully inspire her children to set a similar goal. “I lost a dear friend of mine about 10 years ago and it really inspired me to take full advantage of the life I have,” Ledyard said. “So, I decided I wanted to travel to each state and take my sons to all 50 states before their 18th birthdays.” In June, Ledyard, a former third-grade teacher at Cochise Elementary School in Scottsdale, took her family on an Alaskan cruise that featured a stop at the Hubbard Glacier, completing her quest to reach all 50 states. On achieving the milestone, Ledyard said, “Everything that I experienced made me appreciate how cool this journey has been. Everyone was so excited for me when we got there, and although I was excited, I think my family was more excited for me than I was for myself. “I set this goal so long ago that when I finally concluded it, I was more in shock than anything else,” Ledyard said. Ledyard confided that what she found most fascinating about her travels was how kind people are in every state. “Everywhere I have been, I met someone who was willing to take time and talk to us; there are truly good-hearted people everywhere.” Scott Ledyard, 15, and current AHS Titan, said he is thankful for the opportunities he has had to travel with his mother. “Alaska, for example, was awesome. The food was great, the fishing was great and it is really beautiful there.” Scott said he wants to travel to the Pacific Northwest next, saying Oregon and Washington will be his 45th and 46th states respectively. “Honestly, the fun lies in the decision making for the next trip,” said Ledyard. “As much as the family time away from home is great, sitting together, as a family, and deciding where to go next is always a fun time.” Arcadia woman completes a 10-year, 50-state journey
