Page 19 September 2 0 16 GENERAL ELECTION NOVEMBER 8 TH Representation with Results It has been an honor to serve as your State Representative for six years. As of today, Arizona’s economy is stronger and we are focusing on our most important resource – our children. My legislative accomplishments include providing life-saving care to over 300 uninsured women diagnosed with breast or cervical cancer. I sponsored legislation creating the Department of Child Safety with the sole mission of protecting Arizona’s children. Last session, I brought KidsCare to the House members for a vote, we passed it and the Governor signed it! By Mallory Gleich It all started with a challenge. The year was 1973. Two employees of the Des Moines Register , an Iowa community newspaper, discussed an idea. John Karras suggested that Don Kaul, both of them avid bicyclists, take a ride across Iowa and write about his experiences. Don, who lived in Washington D.C. at the time, said that he would do it, but only if John went with him. Challenge accepted. The men then decided to invite a few friends along by posting the idea in the paper. Readers were given a map and told the destinations, and the “Great Six-Day Bicycle Ride” was put into motion. In the first year around 114 people made the entire ride across Iowa. The number grew larger in the following years. In 1975, around 2,400 riders made it the entire way. The founders decided it should be a tradition that each rider dips his or her wheel in the Missouri River to begin the ride, and in the Mississippi River to signal that they made it the entire way. Because of the growth of the ride, the name was changed to “The Register’s Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa,” or RAGBRAI. RAGBRAI continued to grow in popularity. In 1982, RAGBRAI’s 10th year, riders went 523 miles across Iowa, which was the longest distance up to that point. Every year the route varied, and every year more people joined in the ride, with hundreds and even thousands of people joining in celebrations within the course. This year boasted five new people to the RAGBRAI tradition: five of the City of Scottsdale’s employees. In recent years, the RAGBRAI council had devised a plan…if you wanted to ride, you had to apply for a spot. And that’s just what John Kelley, Greg Davies, Pete Peralta, Andrew Dorame and Jack Miller did. The ride started on July 24 and ended seven days later. The City of Scottsdale Five returned to Arizona on August 3. “It was overwhelming. Such a huge event. It was unknown to us how it was going to unfold,” said Greg Davies, a senior transportation planner. The team was given a series of maps to show where to go and where they would stay each night. This year, the ride was 420 miles long. On average, riders traveled about 50 miles a day. John Kelley, also a senior transportation planner, said that the hardest part was riding 50 miles a day without having a break in between days. “There are so many hills in Iowa…and they’re steep,” said John. At the end of the ride, as the members of The City of Scottsdale dipped their front wheels into the water of the Mississippi River, feelings were pretty much the same all around: “I was ecstatic. Such a sense of accomplishment,” said John. “When you dip your tire in the water, your first thought is, ‘Yes, we made it’,” said Greg. So, will the City of Scottsdale Five make another appearance at RAGBRAI? We’ll have to wait until next year to see!
