CALL US LAST! Classes available 24/7/365! By Craig Goossen The intense heat would be a deterrent for many, but Arizonians have true grit and grind out the temperatures without buckling. We know perfect weather is coming to us and until then, we do our best to find ways to keep our spirits high. The dog days of summer are here, and there’s a wealth of quality concerts this month to satisfy every taste. Take a listen to the selected tracks for this month’s music mix, go grab your tickets and don’t be too bothered by the heat. DURAN DURAN: PRESSURE OFF (featuring Janelle Monáe and Nile Rodgers) 2015 Poppy boy bands have existed in modern culture for some time, but few, if any, have endured with longevity. Duran Duran can easily be overlooked for their ’80s MTV oversaturation, but in the end they’re a clutch party band who’s aged with grace and never- ending energy. Get to the show early to see one of the all-time greats, Nile Rodgers and his band Chic. Duran Duran will perform on Wednesday, August 3 at Gila River Arena, 9400 W. Maryland Ave. in Glendale. Tickets start at $23 and Chic (featuring Nile Rodgers) will open. ALABAMA SHAKES: DON’T WANNA FIGHT (2015) Alabama Shakes’ two releases are essential listening for your heart, soul and ears. Boys & Girls (2012) and Sound & Color (2015) are equally great and certainly not replications of each other. When you see this great band live, you’ll discover they’re the real deal and you’ll be thirsty to see what more they produce. Singer Brittany Howard is a queen bee whose pipes are right there with anyone, man or woman. Alabama Shakes will perform on Sunday, August 7 at Comerica Theatre, 400 W. Washington St., in downtown Phoenix. Tickets start at $38 and Dawes will open. BARONESS: SHOCK ME (2015) The veteran Georgia heavy metal band survived a horrific bus accident in Bath, England while touring in 2012. The accident sidelined the band for several years and altered their original lineup due to injury, but the band recovered in 2015 with an accomplished comeback Purple. It’s hard not to root for this rocking band, so come support their summer tour. Baroness will perform on Saturday, August 27 at Crescent Ballroom, 308 N. Second Ave. in downtown Phoenix. Tickets are $28 and the show is for concertgoers 16 years and older. ADELE: WATER UNDER THE BRIDGE (2015) If singing were a sport, Adele would be the undisputed, reigning world champion. Two nights in Phoenix is an awfully gracious gesture by a major visiting artist and I know our community will shower her with appreciation. Adele will perform on Tuesday, August 16 and Wednesday, August 17 at Talking Stick Arena, 201 E. Jefferson St. in downtown Phoenix. Tickets start $34.75. BEN HARPER: BOTH SIDES OF THE GUN (2006) Ben Harper has built quite the catalog, dating back to his heralded debut Welcome to the Cruel World (1994) through his recently released, Call It What It Is (2016) backed by his longtime band The Innocent Criminals. This selected track seemed appropriate for these challenging times. Ben Harper and The Innocent Criminals will perform on Thursday, August 25 at the Marquee Theatre, 730 N. Mill Ave. in Tempe. Tickets start at $52. Cool shows for Arizona’s hot August nights MUSIC NOTES

INCLUDES A $25 DAIL Y FOOD & BEVERAGE CREDIT SUMMER PLAYCATION PACKAGE FROM $ 1 19 * By Riley Kissee It isn’t unusual to pass by a bar and realize that after six months it has changed to a new concept. Typically a new concept is not by choice, but because the previous rendition of the space was no longer working, or never worked to begin with. And it’s no surprise, as it’s often hard to compete with the latest and greatest watering holes in town. But what if a bar purposefully changed their concept on a regular basis to remain fresh and innovative? That’s exactly what Counter Intuitive has done. Located in Old Town Scottsdale, this speakeasy offers a unique imbibing experience several times a year. With each cycle, the theme of the lounge is disassembled entirely. Everything in the bar must go and all of the elements from the previous theme are auctioned off. As of right now, the current episode is Opening Day in 1929 at the Agua Caliente Racetrack. The theme is named after a Tijuana racetrack that was prominent with Americans, particularly the elite and Hollywood celebrities, when drinking, gambling and horse racing were outlawed entirely in the United States. With that theme in mind, the current lineup of cocktails places a lot of emphasis on tequila and various Mezcals. The cocktail menu was developed by an all-star lineup of Arizona mixologists. Each cocktail is mixed with house-made syrups, shrubs (acidic mixers), infusions and juices using the utmost creativity and thoughtfulness. Many of the cocktails receive their name from racehorses that were part of the original Agua Caliente lineup. The current edition of Counter Intuitive has over 60 different types of agave stocked behind the bar and a mechanical horse machine that goes off each hour and features a corresponding agave spirit. The horse that wins the race provides a special discount to any guest that orders that specific spirit. If you’re hungry, there’s also an assortment of small bites, which include hearty tacos, a shrimp cocktail, deviled eggs and most notably, a late night breakfast burrito. Counter Intuitive is open every Friday and Saturday from 8 p.m. to 2 a.m. and only their team knows exactly how long the current episode will remain.
