THURSDAY NIGHTS SCOTTSDALEGALLERIES.COM aspen glory • kyle o’malley • 36” x 24” x 1.5” • oil on canvas By Kelly Potts On September 24, twenty-four years after its initial ride, the Grand Canyon Racing bike race will ride again. The race started in October of 1991 with 51 cyclists, including several European professionals, who raced Grand Canyon Railways Engine 18 from the Grand Canyon to Williams. However, Engine 18 encountered several challenges along the way, including bad track, and the race was never held again…until recently. In 2015, Grand Canyon Racing co- founders P.J. Bohrman and Mark Booth brought back the competitive bike race. “A colleague reached out to me about starting this again, and it seemed like a no- brainer,” said Bohrman. “I moved from Wisconsin to Arizona, and biking was one of the first things I took up here. This is a great state to bike in, so why not bike against a machine?” The race begins on Highway 64 in Tusayan and travels 53 miles south with the finish line on Historic Route 66 at the intersection of Second Street and Historic Route 66, adjacent to the Grand Canyon Railway Depot. The race travels 50 miles on Highway 64 before merging on to Historic Route 66 for the final 3 miles. “One of the best things about this race is you get to ride through historic Arizona, and experience a town that is simply amazing,” said Bohrman. This year, Grand Canyon Racing will benefit Phoenix Children’s Hospital and local high schools. “It’s one thing to have this fun, iconic race, but why not use it for good and raise some money for worthy causes?” said Bohrman. Bohrman moved to Arcadia eight years ago with his wife, and the two have since had two daughters. “I moved from Wisconsin and was looking for grass and trees,” said Bohrman. “I’m pretty sure I found the only sliver in Arizona that has that. The Arcadia neighborhood is perfect and peaceful, very reminiscent of Wisconsin – minus the heat!” On the weekends, Bohrman and his family take bike rides throughout the neighborhood. “Biking is something that my family and I enjoy leisurely, and something I enjoy doing competitively. Doing this race last year was life changing and I can’t wait to see what this grows too. I think the community has embraced the history and the race, and it can only get better from here,” said Bohrman.
