Heat is the No. 1 weather-related cause of death in Arizona and across the country. From year to year, nearly 2,000 people visit Arizona emergency rooms because of heat-related illnesses, according to the Arizona Department of Health Services. It doesn’t matter how healthy you are or how long you’ve lived here, the heat can affect you. When adults and children work and play outside in extreme heat, dehydration can happen quickly. Despite excessive heat warnings, you might underestimate the dangers. Heat-related illness usually comes in stages: • The first stage is excessive thirst. Mild dehydration has already set in at this point, but drinking water and electrolyte replacement drinks can help prevent progression to a more serious form of heat- related illness. • Heat exhaustion begins with fatigue and a mild sunburn, progressing to excessive sweating, muscle cramps, dizziness, headache, nausea and vomiting. If you experience any of these symptoms, quickly move into a cooler environment and rehydrate with sports drinks or water. • Left untreated, heat exhaustion can lead to heat stroke. This is a serious medical emergency that can result in permanent neurological damage or even death. Symptoms can include hot and dry skin, or a lack of perspiration; a throbbing headache, nausea and dizziness; confusion and unconsciousness; a rapid, strong pulse; and a body temperature in excess of 105 F! Heat stroke can cause seizures, organ failure and a coma. If you suspect heat stroke, immediately call 911. The good news is that you can prevent heat- related illnesses and death. Prevention remains the best approach, so be cautious once temperatures begin to rise. Limit outdoor activity between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., the hottest part of the day. If you’re outside, wear light clothing, a hat and sunglasses and remember to take frequent breaks. You’ll need more water than you think, so drink before you feel thirsty. If you plan to be outdoors in the heat, try to hydrate well the night before and the morning of your activities. Infants, young children, the elderly and people with chronic health conditions are at greater risk and should stay where it’s cooler. Run errands, exercise or do outdoor work in the early mornings or evenings whenever possible. Never ever leave an infant, young child or pet in a parked car, not even for a minute. — Nicholas Kucinski, D.O., is a family medicine physician with HonorHealth Medical Group.
