Page 46 July 2016 By Katie Mayer A trip to Las Vegas last year led to the experience of a lifetime for Arcadia High School graduate Rudy Escutia. When Escutia traveled to Las Vegas with his team the Scottsdale Blackhawks last year, it was like any other club soccer tournament. What he didn’t know, however, was that he was being watched. A group of former professional UK-based soccer players turned coaches were on vacation in Las Vegas and stopped by the tournament to see the players. Escutia stood out. As a three-time medal winner in state and regional tournaments, Escutia was used to college scouts and soccer camps noticing him, but when the coaches reached out to him, it seemed too good to be true. “I checked my emails and saw the many ‘you’re invited to this camp’ emails, and I kept scrolling through. Then I saw an email from i2i International Soccer Academy,” Escutia said. “The email said that they were impressed with my talent and saw potential and the coaches were inviting me to go over to England and check out the lifestyle and see if I liked it.” He added, “I thought the email was a hoax and didn’t give it much thought.” In passing, he mentioned it to his father – a highly decorated soccer player himself. His dad told Escutia to research the program. “I saw it was an actual academy in England… The coaches were retired English Premier League players,” Escutia said. “I realized, ‘Yeah, I need to do this.’” Living in a lower-income west Phoenix neighborhood, Escutia knew the cost would be a challenge. The program was free, but Escutia had to pay for the travel himself. Escutia’s family chipped in and made the trip possible. He spent 10 days in York, England and traveled around playing a number of international semiprofessional teams. The center midfielder stood out to the coaches in England as much as he did in Las Vegas. Escutia was ultimately one of only three players that the i2i International Soccer Academy selected to join their first team. They will compete internationally against some of the world’s best soccer players and give Escutia the chance to be noticed at the professional level in one of the top soccer countries in the world. The 18-year-old plans to leave for England in late August to join the prestigious international team and simultaneously attend college at York St. John University. “Getting the offer was wonderful,” Escutia said. “My dad was really excited, so was my mom, but what I didn’t know my dad did – and my mom told me – is he started crying when I told him.” Escutia’s parents encouraged him to go, but told him he needs to raise the money to attend the university, which has an annual tuition of $36,000. So, Escutia started a GoFundMe campaign and he is also applying for scholarships and school loans. “I’ve started a GoFundMe campaign so I can reach my dreams and not burden my family,” Escutia said. “I’m trying to get money from wherever I can because… it truly is a dream and I’d love nothing more than to make everyone who has met me proud.” Escutia’s father Jesus Escutia said he is already proud of his son. “He is doing well in soccer, but also in school,” Jesus Escutia said. “He has worked hard on the club and training… I didn’t really expect the opportunity, but you are always hoping for something like this.” Jesus said he had similar opportunities as a young man, but as a new immigrant to the United States, he had to work 10-hour days and take the bus to practice and his responsibilities prevented him from focusing full time on soccer. He is happy to see his son have the opportunity to go far. “He made a lot of sacrifices and this is nice, if you like the game, but it’s tough too,” Jesus said. “It’s going to be tough over there… It’s a big competition and he needs to be [giving] 100 percent pretty much every day to the schooling and soccer too.” However, sacrifices are something Escutia has made often as a young soccer player. He has dedicated nearly every free moment to club and high school soccer, private lessons and tournaments. On top of it all, he never missed more than two or three days of school in all four years of high school, his father said. Petar Baralic, owner of Serious Soccer in Phoenix, has worked with Escutia to improve his technical skills for more than five years. Escutia is one of three students trained by Baralic who has gone on to semiprofessional and professional opportunities in Europe. “It’s his ability to see the field and recognize where to go with the soccer ball and also the ability to do individual one- on-one,” Baralic said of his student. Baralic believes the i2i International Soccer Academy opportunity will open amazing doors for Escutia. “With a little bit of luck in England, he is going to make $5 million and with a lot of luck, he will make $40-$80 million,” Baralic said. “You put in the work and it pays off one day eventually.” Escutia would like to thank coaches Petar Baralic, David Cameron, Chris Scotti, Marty Flores, Ramiz Sabijic, Jason Moon, Adam Burke and Luis Dabo. Page 47 July 2016 By Nick Smith It was a clean sweep for the Veritas middle school boys tennis team at the 2016 Great Hear ts Middle School Leag ue Championships in May. The Falcons won the singles, doubles and team championship trophies. “I had tears in my eyes watching it,” said Harry Broome, who helps coach the team alongside Joe Vivirito and Lisa Townsend. “There was great spirit, with about 50 to 60 parents staying all the way to the end and everyone shaking hands on both teams at the end.” Broome has had two of his own children come through the Veritas middle school and appreciates the unique features of the preparatory academy. “It’s a parent-friendly charter school with high expectations academically,” said Broome. “One of the good things about the sports programs is they’re smaller but still very competitive. It gives kids chances to play and succeed.” Charlie Cobb, who won the boys middle school singles championship, led the team. He was named the school’s “outstanding boys player” for the second year in a row and finished the season with a 10-2 record. “Charlie is always there trying to help others on the team improve as he pushes himself and his teammates,” said Joe Vivirito at the team’s tennis awards ceremony. Evan Broome and Peter Schillinger won the doubles championship. “Those boys shine in the classroom and are so coachable,” said Broome. “They have outstanding character and are very competitive.” Cobb, Broome and Schillinger were joined by their teammates, Spencer Handley, Will Erblich, Mason Kaminski, George Wintering and Cameron Grove in winning the team championship. “This core team that has come up over the years together,” said Broome. “We’ve always had such tough competition and the championship was a little unexpected. It was a big moment for Veritas.” A unique aspect of Veritas is the Falcon Award that is given to a player from each sports team who best represents the ideals of the academy by distinguishing themselves through exceptional athleticism, scholarship, citizenship, character and leadership. All three of the tennis team’s individual state winners won the Falcon Award: Cobb for soccer, Schillinger for track and cross- country and Broome for tennis. At the end of the year, all three came up for the official Falcon Award, which Schillinger won. “It was a great moment to see the three of them on the stage next to each other,” said Broome. “Evan and Charlie were so happy for Peter.
