It’s almost as if Arcadia’s motto is, “Everyone is gone in July.” But seriously, is this even true? I’m not sure when or how this myth began. But I’m determined to start doing a bit of research on the topic, because while many of our friends and neighbors take vacations during the summer months, the idea that the entire community is gone for three months, just isn’t true. How do I know? For one, there is still traffic on the road. Actually, I’ve sat in traffic more through the middle of June then I even remember in March. While driving to work this morning, I saw four different people I know, driving past or alongside me. And yesterday I ran into two friends while running errands. There are people everywhere. My guess is that because the weather is less than desirable, we see less people walking their dogs and riding their beach cruisers along the canal, so we assume our neighbors are all out of town. But when my neighbors and I decided to plan our first-ever block party for the Fourth of July, we were overwhelmed with RSVPs. And how about when the annual Arcadia Parade thought about taking a break this year –its 20th– and loyal supporters made their voices heard, reminding the organizers that there is, in fact, a large group of people who look forward to this event every year, who attend this event every year, and who are in town and ready to celebrate the nation’s birthday, Arcadia style. Two of my favorite stories this month include one about former Arcadia High student Rudy Escutia (page 46) and his hopeful journey to become a professional soccer player. The other shares Arcadia resident Jill Thomas’ experience on her trip to Greece to provide relief to Syrian refugees (page 36).
