Page 38 July 2016 By Rachael Bouley The Arcadia High School Travel Club created memories of a lifetime on their recent trip to the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador. The club, led by Arcadia chemistry teacher Jon Martens, is a program that offers students an opportunity to explore different cultures and countries. Since 2009, the club has gone on seven trips, visiting Costa Rica, Italy, Peru, China, Greece, Turkey, Switzerland, Austria, Germany, Czech Republic and Ecuador. This year, 10 students and two teacher chaperones, including Martens, made their way to South America for an experience that included snorkeling with marine life, standing on the equator, hiking on the islands and making memories with the locals. The Arcadia High community has Mr. Martens to thank for providing students with this trip. At the school where he previously taught, there was a travel club, and Martens fulfilled his goal of organizing his own program when he moved to Arcadia High. Traveling has always been part of his life. “When I was younger, traveling really allowed me to get to know who I was and who I wanted to be,” Martens said. “Now, I think the biggest thing is that it’s my sanctuary. I am never relaxed unless I’m traveling. There is always something that needs to be done when I’m at home and traveling allows me to forget about my lists and just be in the moment.” To prepare students for the trip, Martens and the club held several meetings to go over the itinerary as well as common concerns such as packing, safety and understanding different cultures. There were so many wonderful destinations to choose from, but Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands were ultimately selected based on the educational value and reasonable cost. The excursion was full of action and adventure. “During our time in the Galapagos, we visited many of the smaller islands in the archipelago and did everything from snorkeling to bird watching to touring huge underground lava tunnels,” said student Riley Johnson. The students also took the time to see the Charles Darwin Station and the Wall of Tears. They even caught a glimpse of the Ecuadorian president! The trip was enlightening for the participants, who encountered a variety of languages and traditions. “I learned that there are so many cultures in the world and everyone lives so differently,” Mia Rangel, one of the participants, said. “What is normal in one place may be completely unheard of in another.” Their travels allowed the students to bond with one another and make lifelong memories. “I would definitely recommend the trip based purely off the relationships I’ve made with other students,” Xavier Rubio said. Some of the students looked at the world differently after seeing more of it. “I learned that the Galapagos Islands are a very fragile and sensitive environment, and everyone who lives there wants to be sure it is preserved and not damaged in any way,” Jacob Staudenmaier said. “We learned to be very respectful of the environment and all the creatures and animals there.” Upon their return home, the students agreed this was an extraordinary opportunity that all AHS students should consider. The Travel Club and its excursions are open to any current Arcadia High student. “The experience is once-in-a-lifetime, something you will never forget,” Staudenmaier said. AHS Travel Club explores Ecuador and Galapagos Islands Students were treated to breathtaking sights in Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands. The trip wouldn’t have been complete without a photo featuring a famous Galapagos Tortoise. By Gabrielle Mercer Over 50 Arcadia High School students were trained and certified in CPR after taking a class put on by the AHS athletic training staff and the Phoenix Fire Department. Arcadia’s athletic trainer, Emily Clarke, conducted the class for her sports medicine students in conjunction with the PFD in an effort to better prepare students for emergency situations. Arcadia’s athletic director, Kevin Mooney, said the training was an ambitious project that required a lot of work, but Clarke made it look easy. “It was a wonderful event that will result in many students being capable of saving a life,” Mooney said. “Emily Clarke has worked tirelessly as the athletic trainer at Arcadia High School, not only is she an accomplished trainer who is loved and respected by the entire athletic community, she has grown into an excellent teacher.” Fees for the class were covered by community donations. AHS senior Caroline Ranger, who is in her third year of sport medicine courses, said that it was a great feeling to see the school and district’s support for the training. “Because they taught over 50 students, Arcadia is a much safer place. We know that so many [students] are capable and confident acting in an emergency situation,” Ranger said. AHS sophomore Dylan Watkiss said that the class benefited him because of his job as a babysitter. “I hope I’m never in the situation where I have to perform CPR, but it is nice to know that I know how to do it just in case,” Watkiss said. “I feel quite confident about performing CPR. I recommend this class to any and everyone.” Clarke, who currently teaches two courses in sports medicine at AHS, has tried to put together CPR training at the school for two years. Earning her Bachelor of Science in athletic training from Washington State University, Clarke was introduced to athletic training in high school, where she first found her passion. “When I had the opportunity to begin teaching three years ago, I knew it would be extremely rewarding to be able to share my passion to these students, as it was something I found during my sophomore year of high school,” Clarke said. “I wanted to do the CPR training class so my students could be certified and recognized as Heartsavers,” Clarke said. Being in the Scottsdale School District, all of the students in AHS sports medicine classes have learned CPR, however the students leave without a certification. Clarke said when she realized this she decided to reach out to the Phoenix Fire Department, as she thought their help would benefit the students and community. “I am so proud to know that we have an additional 54 students on the AHS campus that could save a life in an emergency situation,” Clarke said. SOUTHWEST ASSOCIATION OF NEWSPAPERS Page 39 July 2016 By Ian Kraft Phoenix native and current Arcadia resident Jake DeBruyckere went on a trip with friends to California without a care in the world. Little did he know, on that trip he would snap a photograph that would change his life forever. DeBruyckere said he always had a passion for art as a child, but never imagined how far he would take his photography. “Growing up, I had no idea what I was doing with a camera,” DeBruyckere admitted. “I picked up photography near the end of high school, but it was somewhat of a hobby. Once Instagram came around, however, I began following professionals and trying to learn from what I saw them doing. It’s from them that I learned more about composing a shot and how to take quality photographs.” DeBruyckere, 25, grew up in the thick of the technological boom, and he said he appreciates how easy it is to take photos in 2016. “I always have my iPhone with me,” DeBruyckere said. “I couldn’t imagine taking trips or going places without it. Taking pictures on my phone is convenient but also really helpful because when I see something, I always have a way to capture a photo.” In November 2015, DeBruyckere took a trip to San Francisco with his friend Samuel Martin and some fellow photographers. It was here DeBruyckere took a photograph that would eventually be seen in multiple countries around the world. “One morning we all went out to Mount Davidson for sunrise where there is this tree called ‘The S.F. Tree’; it’s super popular on Instagram,” DeBruyckere said. “[Samuel] was the only person physically capable of getting onto the branch,” DeBruyckere recalled. “Once he was up there, we all started taking different photos of him. I uploaded my photo to Instagram about 30 minutes later using the hash tags, ‘#ShotOniPhone’ and ‘#BelongSF’. I had no idea how popular the image would become.” Once DeBr uyckere returned to his Arcadia home, he received an email from a Media Arts Lab representative who said they represented Apple and wanted to use his photo for a photography campaign called Shot on iPhone 6s Apple World Gallery. “The email came and to be honest it seemed kind of fishy. After some research, I signed a nondisclosure agreement with them and was told that I might be chosen for the campaign,” DeBruyckere said. “I didn’t hear from them until February 1 of this year, when they finally told me my photo was in fact going to be in the campaign. The next thing I knew, there were billboards with my picture posted on it in New York City, Japan, Italy, Singapore and even Australia,” DeBruyckere said. The campaign also printed his photographs onto posters used throughout the United States in places like Los Angeles and Grand Central Station in New York. His photo was published in the January 2016 issue of Sunset magazine and printed on the back of the April 2016 edition of National Geographic . “The whole experience has been surreal,” DeBruyckere reflected. “Looking at the back of a National Geographic and seeing my photo with my name on it is weird. Millions of people have seen my photo, and it just doesn’t seem real.” For more information on Jake and his photography, visit jakedebruyckere.com or follow him on Instagram, @jaquib.
