MUSIC NOTES By Craig Goossen The great Patti Smith sang People Have The Power and I believe that statement to be the whole truth and nothing but the truth. Music often motivates people to have the power to do or say things they may not have before hearing such inspiring lyrics. When I listen to music, I’m often reminded of things that matter most to me, and how I can make those aspects of my life a priority. Music reminds me that the power to change the world is in our hands. The song suggestions for this month’s mix represent artists who are playing music in the Valley in July. Get out and see one of these shows and let the germs of inspiration and empowerment grow while you listen to the lyrics. BEACH BOYS: GOD ONLY KNOWS (1966) Legend has it that Brian Wilson heard The Beatles’ 1965 classic Rubber Soul and was indelibly inspired by what he heard and immediately started to work on the Beach Boys’ 1966 masterpiece Pet Sounds . Upon hearing Pet Sounds , The Beatles were so taken by Wilson’s achievement that they began work on their own masterpiece, 1967’s Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band . This month, see Wilson perform Pet Sounds in its entirety. Brian Wilson will perform on Saturday, July 9 at the Celebrity Theatre, 440 N. 32nd St. in Phoenix. Tickets start at $60.
