Page 25 July 2016 By Andrea Barkley Having grown up in a healthy eating home, I’m fortunate to never be tempted by “naughty” foods when I eat at restaurants. Although I love and adore food, especially when served with a bit of sexy ambiance, I want to leave the restaurant feeling alive and energized, not bloated and tired. Here are a few of my top go-to healthy meals at nearby restaurants that also have great ambiance. 1. Grilled Vegetable Plate from AZ88 with grilled chicken on top – AZ88 is a white, sleek and modern little restaurant in Old Town Scottsdale with one of the best patios in town. It sits on Civic Center Park and is my number one dinner destination during beautiful weather. AZ88 is famous for their martinis and unfortunately, not so famous for their food. However, one dish – the Grilled Vegetable Plate – is off the charts. Generously portioned, think meaty mushrooms and perfectly cooked broccoli and cauliflower, peppers, carrots, and more, served with a side of light Asian dipping sauce. Add the well-prepared grilled chicken for extra protein. Not even a dash of salt and pepper is needed. It is the perfect low-carb meal and extra fun if you happen to pair it with a dirty Belvedere martini. 2. Tuna Mango Roll at Hillstone - I’m not a big sushi eater, but this is the one roll I crave for the simplicity of its ingredients and impeccable taste, especially during hot Arizona summers when our appetites gravitate toward lighter dishes. It is simply tuna, mango, avocado and rice. As a bonus, Hillstone provides gluten-free soy sauce upon request. I like to enjoy my Tuna Mango Roll with a crisp glass of Sauvignon Blanc at their fun bar. 3. Lettuce-Wrapped Braised Beef Tacos from TEN Handcrafted American Fare and Spirits - If you haven’t been to TEN yet at the Esplanade, you are missing out. Chef Jeff Hostenske brings classic American food with an emphasis on quality ingredients. While you’ll find these tacos on the appetizer menu, they are hearty enough to enjoy as a meal. They do not come wrapped in lettuce so make the request. They come served on a bed of cold, crisp iceberg lettuce leaves, topped with baby greens, a fried egg with a gloriously runny yolk, and bacon. Divine! TEN’s Pan Roasted Fresh Fish is also a favorite, served with roasted tomato, corn and green beans. I recommend sharing these two dishes with your dining companion. Enjoy these items alongside the house cabernet, which is wonderful and a steal at $5 per glass. — Andrea Barkley is a personal trainer, private cook, founder of Moan Out Loud Protein Shakes.
