I love the color options and the feeling of festiveness and whimsy they bring to any party. Yet even with endless possibilities available from your favorite online party supply companies, the expense is sometimes costly and the custom options are lacking. Lucky for those of us that are craft-crazed and have spawned children who also enjoy a little DIY, paper garlands are easy to make and don’t require a lot of supplies. I love how these garlands can be completely personalized with any shape and color you want! We chose to make a patriotic garland and used vintage-looking American flag paper cut into star and circle shapes for our large gathering of family and friends this July in San Diego. I often find myself dragging large and puffy over-sized decorations to our destination and surprising the family by jazzing up our group’s doors and balconies. But hip hip hooray! This year the garland will pack absolutely flat, and once unfurled, bring tons of festiveness to the party. My son excitedly delved into this. It’s quick and easy and fun. Supervise the cutting and sewing depending on the ages of your little crafters. And then go crazy with your shape and color choices. Cut, sew and go... garland DIY PAPER GARLANDS INSTRUCTIONS: Start by cutting out shapes from your paper. I chose stars because of July Fourth, but you can do whatever you want! Cut out balloons or party hats for a birthday party, cut out hearts for Valentine’s Day, pink or blue circles for a baby shower, or cut out Christmas trees for Christmas – you get the idea! Once your paper shapes are cut out, all you have to do is sew them into a garland. Pull out a few inches of thread and leave it long, then sew across the middle of one paper shape. Or sew closer to the top if you want to make sure your shapes hang upright – if you sew through the middle they may flip upside down every once in a while and if you didn’t use two-sided color paper, that may bug you. Paper is thinner than fabric. Make sure the tension on your machine is set low, and the stitch length is set to something longer. You don’t want too many holes in a row because your paper could tear like a perforation. Go slow and you’ll be fine. When you get to the end of the first paper shape, keep sewing; don’t lift the foot or cut the thread. Gently pull the shape out behind the sewing machine and keep sewing so you get approximately one-half to one inch of sewn thread before you start sewing onto the next shape. Keep sewing across one shape at a time, and then sewing nothing for an inch or so, until you sew all of your shapes into a long garland. We’re aiming for 10-foot garlands. Lift up the foot and cut the thread, leaving another tail on this end. And now you have an adorably sewn paper garland. Hang it on a mantel, off a balcony, over a doorway, or wherever, and enjoy!
