Unfortunately, nearly 100 children and adults drown in Arizona alone each year. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children 4 years old and younger. A surprising number of adults drown each year in pools, spas, lakes and oceans. The nonprofit Safe Kids Coalition has taken a close look at the causes of childhood drowning. The major factors fell into five categories: lack of supervision, no barriers to the pool, no CPR skills, no swimming skills and no life jackets. When you pay attention to all five categories of prevention, you can make a difference and keep your loved ones – big and little – safe this summer. • Always give children your full attention around water. After a child drowns, adults often report that they just looked away for second or they didn’t hear or see anything until it was too late. • Never swim alone. A common factor for adults dying in pools is due to swimming alone and having a heart attack or seizure. • Arizona Revised Statute 36-1681 requires that a swimming pool be protected by an enclosure (wall, fence or barrier) that surrounds the pool area, unless a local code provides otherwise. Rules vary, depending on the residence, and whether young children live there. Get details at azleg.gov. Select Arizona Revised Statutes from the left navigation menu and then search for 36-1681. • The American Academy of Pediatrics research shows that children who have formal swimming lessons between the ages of 1 to 4 may be at a lower risk of drowning, but cautions swimming lessons are not a way to “drown proof” anyone. • Learn CPR. Post CPR instructions on the pool fence. Find American Red Cross classes at redcross.org. • Another layer of protection is a pool alarm and door and window alarms on your house. • Keep rescue equipment near the pool such as a long pole, life jacket and a portable phone. • Inf latable toys and “floaties” are not a substitute for a life jacket or for supervision. • Boating and alcohol use do not mix. One in five adult drownings at a lake are related to alcohol. Additionally, driving a boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs puts others at risk and is illegal. • Children of all swimming skill levels and adults are strongly recommended to always wear life jackets on a boat or near bodies of water. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in 88 percent of those drowning cases, the victims were not wearing a life jacket. • Think through what you would do, before an emergency happens. The CDC recommends the following steps: Shout for help. Pull the child from the water. Call 911. Check the child’s airway and breathing and immediately begin CPR or Cardiocerebral resuscitation if necessary. — Gautam Aggarwal, M.D. is a primary care physician at HonorHealth.
