Ehlers began her time at Christ Lutheran in 2000 as a second- and f ifth-grade teacher before becoming the assistant principal in the 2003-2004 school year. After 16 years at Christ Lutheran, 10 years as the principal, Ehlers has decided to resign so she can focus her efforts on her husband’s charity, The Garuna Foundation, which aids impoverished children in Cambodia by providing an opportunity for them to attend a Garuna Christian School. “I think we have grown and developed a place that has heart,” Ehlers said. “I have tried to ensure that this school gives back and does things for the right reasons. I think parents feel comfortable sending their sons and daughters here because of our community feel.” Ehlers said she is excited to see what the future has in store, but that it hurts to leave such a great community behind in the process. “The part that is hardest to leave is the kids,” Ehlers said. “They are like family… I view them as 580 of my own kids,” Ehlers added. “It will be hard to leave the day-to-day interactions with them behind.” Ehlers also said since she is a member of C h r i s t Lut he r a n Church, she hopes to be able to reconnect with some of her students every Sunday. “I can still live in Phoenix,” Ehlers said. “But I will be able travel with my husband more to work with the foundation, while trying to develop relationships with other schools in the Valley.” Ehlers said she isn’t retiring. She said working with her husband’s foundation offers an opportunity to spend the next 10 years doi ng somet h i ng impactful while she’s still able to travel. “It just seems like the right time for me to step down,” Ehlers added. John Doyle, assistant principal to Ehlers for the past decade, called Ehlers, “a mentor and role model.” “Cheryl is very well received by her students,” Doyle said. “She can offer up a hug to a struggling student while maintaining her leadership status, but she also understands the ministry.” Doyle said Ehlers is well received by her students, understands the ministry, and is trusted by parents and students. Doyle will be named the interim principal in the fall, and he cited her patience and wisdom as qualities he hopes to have garnered from his time with Ehlers. “If I can be a fraction of what [Ehlers] was as a principal,” Doyle said, “I will be in great shape.” CLS Principal trades classroom for Cambodia Cheryl Ehlers is stepping down as principal of Christ Lutheran School to join her husband’s foundation. IN NEXT MONTH’S ISSUE Page 55 June 2016 By Rachael Bouley The media communications program at Arcadia High School was featured on the big screen at the Shea 14 Harkins Theatre on May 2. As part of the annual Film Festival event, film and broadcasting students displayed their best work and were recognized for their contributions to the program and school. Arcadia High, the school that legendary director Steven Spielberg attended for three years, provides students with unique opportunities to explore their interests in filmmaking and television news throughout the year. Teacher Eric Luse is at the forefront of this effort as he leads the Arcadia News Network and filmmaking class. At the event, made possible by the Arcadia Media Communications Booster Club and the local Arcadia community, attendees were treated to screenings of student films and newscasts. The films exemplified their hard work, as the students were responsible for every step, from writing the screenplay to filming to editing and producing. Awards were presented to members of the Arcadia News Network team and film students. Sixth Period , a film about a high school student who races against the clock to complete her Spanish project on time and the many problems that ensue, took home the honor for best film and fan favorite. This was a rewarding moment for the students who worked tirelessly on the film, including sophomore producer Dallas Greene. “It was awesome to have our film be recognized as fan favorite,” he said. “I’m glad the audience liked it as much as we did!” Dallas said he has gained valuable experience in coordinating locations, actors, personnel and equipment; and improved upon his organization, problem solving and teamwork skills. Mr. Luse was always available to help and guide his students to success, ensuring the classroom is a safe and fun learning environment. “For all of our projects, he lets us be as creative as we wish and he brings technical knowledge to help us translate our vision to the screen,” Dallas said. “I like to think that our film class is a really creative community, and we have a lot of fun doing what we do.” The film festival was the culmination of a year of detailed planning and hard work. At the start of the semester, each student in the film class was required to write a screenplay and pitch their scripts to the class. The students voted which scripts were the best to be made into films, and then they applied for the roles they wanted, such as director, producer and sound technician. Then, the students were assigned to film teams and tasked with turning their scripts into quality films. The project was a valuable lesson in teamwork and troubleshooting. “We had lots of problems we had to figure out, such as actors canceling at the last minute, classrooms being unavailable, or equipment malfunctions,” said Jacob Staudenmaier, director of fan-favorite Sixth Period . “We learned to improvise.” Alli Gooch, cinematographer and editor for Sixth Period , said she realized the importance of detailed planning and organization, and that all their hard work was completely worth it. “I’ve learned it’s imperative that you carefully plan the production phase. It takes a lot of coordination to film even the most simple scenes,” Alli said. “It was really cool to see the film we’ve worked so hard on finally premiere on the big screen. Every film was amazing and it was definitely a night to remember.” 6th annual Arcadia High student film festival at Harkins Students who produced Sixth Period , a film about student life, won fan favorite and best film.
