Indian School Road, Phoenix AZ 85018 Page 53 June 2 0 1 6 By Mallory Gleich Arcadia Neighborhood Learning Center received some special help recently from a former student who wanted to give a helping hand while earning his Eagle badge in Boy Scout Troop 41. Sam Riess, who now attends Arcadia High School, decided to rebuild the tortoise habitat that serves as a learning tool for students at ANLC. The habitat helps students learn about wildlife and plants of the Sonoran Desert. Around four years ago, ANLC was rebuilt and in the process, the tortoise habitat was damaged and insufficiently rebuilt for the wildlife that lives there, specifically Herbert the tortoise. For Sam’s Boy Scout Eagle Service Project, he decided to rebuild Herbert’s habitat to meet Certified Wildlife Habitat status. “I wanted to refurbish Herbert’s habitat because I wanted to help ANLC, make the habitat look nice, and make the habitat safe for the tortoise,” Sam said. Sam has been a Boy Scout for four years, and was a Cub Scout for five years before that. He decided to help out his former school and earn a new badge in the process. In order to make Herbert’s home a sufficient and safe place to live, Sam had to do a number of things. He enlisted the help of other scouts, parents, teachers and donations in order to complete the project. On April 9, they got to work. First, they had to take out agaves that were dying on top of Herbert’s underground home. Once that was done, they rebuilt the underground lair to make it more sturdy and permanent. They also made it large enough to fit two more tortoises, should the school decide to add more. Then, they did some landscaping and took out all the plants that were not a viable food source for Herbert. They replaced these with 35 plants that are native to Herbert’s natural habitat. They also rebuilt the pond in the habitat and turned it into a stream to make it safer for Herbert to use. Troop 41 enlisted the help of Paul Holdeman of The Pond Gnome to help build the stream. “The project is completed but now I’m looking into the idea of putting up signs that would label the plants and their function in the tortoise environment,” Sam said. Sam also said that planning and getting everything ready for the project was harder than completing the actual project. The Troop started their project at 6 a.m. and completed it around 1 p.m. the same day. “If I see an animal in need, I will try to help it to the best of my ability,” Sam said. Because of that, now Herbert the tortoise can live a happy and healthy life at ANLC’s wildlife habitat.
