Lightweight Page 44 June 2016 By Katie Mayer It was likely the hands of men that built the soaring bell tower and grandiose arches of Phoenix’s St. Thomas the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, but it was a group of women behind the scenes who helped make it all possible. A small group of women volunteers called Our Lady of the Assumption Sodality started a rummage sale around 1955 with just three women and a dream of helping fund the formation of the new church. Today, the organization is celebrating its 65th anniversary at St. Thomas the Apostle and the women continue to support the parish and its school’s students with funds raised from the annual rummage sale. Spanning five days and boasting eight air-conditioned rooms of goods, the annual sale attracts shoppers from far and wide looking for everything from fine china to clothing and house wares. This year’s sale will be held June 21-25. Last year’s rummage sale raised more than $35,000 and supported scholarships for students attending Catholic schools, local nonprofit groups, the parish and other events and activities at the church. “It’s a credit to all of the ladies over the years who have built it up as they’ve passed it on,” said Marlene Clark, historian for Our Lady of the Assumption Sodality. “They’ve really developed some good patterns… It’s a very well-oiled machine when it comes to this rummage.” Spearheaded with military precision by rummage chairman Nancy Lizarraga, who is retired from the Arizona Army National Guard and has worked for years in retail, the event is the culmination of a yearlong effort of collecting and organizing donated items. Thanks to a donated storage unit and a volunteer force more than 50 strong, goods can be Church rummage sale celebrates more than 60 years collected, stored and moved around as needed for the event. “I get the truck, then I have a crew of ladies who volunteer and they help me process everything, price it, clean it and wash it, just like it’s a store,” Lizarraga said. Parishioners, family, friends and others in the community donate the items for the rummage sale. One of the special services the Sodality provides is accepting donations from people whose loved ones have passed away. At the request of a family member, the ladies will come to a home and package up and take items that the family members do not want or need. They pay special attention to respecting the homes and the families of those who have died and will even help them neatly package items not for donation. No item goes to waste either, Clark said. There are special private openings for nonprofit groups to take their clients in need through the beautifully arranged rooms to pick out home furnishings and other household goods – free of charge – while items that don’t sell are all donated at the end of the event. “Often by the time the sale is over, we’ve not only sold really well, but helped people,” Clark said. When the doors open on the first day, an eager crowd lines up around the building and customers pour in, Clark said. There are folks who return year after year looking for specific items and many new faces who stop by to look for treasures. “I have a lady who comes every year and buys Bibles and she doesn’t care what denomination they are,” Clark said. “Another man comes and buys old postcards.” In 1963, there was even a Shetland pony sold. And in 1992, a donated car was sold. By 1959, the rummage sale expanded from one day to two and had sales totaling $739. By 1977 that number rose to $3,400. At one point, the funds raised helped pay off the debt owed by the church. Clark said that proceeds have risen every year since the rummage sale was founded, and that even in the recession it remained strong. “The word-of-mouth [promotions] are huge, but we do have a great publicity committee,” Clark said. This year’s event will be held on the following dates: Presale, which is $5 to attend and includes a hot dog, chips and drink, is 4-8 p.m. on June 21; regular free dates are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 22; 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 4-8 p.m. on June 23; and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 24 and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on June 25. Donations for the rummage will be collected at the church hall (located north of the church) from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. on June 13-20, except on Sunday. Donations will also be collected 4-8 p.m. on June 14 and June 16. Donation receipts are provided for all donations. In 1963, a Shetland pony was donated to the rummage sale. In 2016, clothing and furniture are more common.

Page 45 June 2016 By Chloe McAllister Yarn bombing is the latest craze in street art to sweep the globe. Yarn bombers use knit patterns instead of the traditional medium of paint to leave their mark. In April, yarn bombing made its debut in Arcadia when one of the benches along the 48th Street green belt was “bombed” with colorful yarn work. Although we don’t know who was directly responsible for the Arcadia Yarn Bombing, we do know how such work began. While the exact origins of yarn bombing (also called urban knitting, guerilla knitting, yarn storming, and knitfitti) are somewhat ambiguous, Magda Sayeg, founder of the Texas group Knitta, is often credited with being the mother of the movement. Some of Sayeg’s most notable knit creations over the course of her 10-year career include a bus in Mexico City and a solo exhibit at La Museo des Esposizione in Rome. She has also worked with companies such as Mini Cooper, Gap and Comme des Garçons, as well as with events like South by Southwest and Austin City Limits Music Festival. “My passion is with the material: I love displaying handmade, mostly knitted material in environments where it seemingly doesn’t belong… only to discover that they can coexist quite harmoniously... It is this unplanned arrangement of the material that makes these objects come to life, become sculptural and even redefine or reinterpret a space,” Sayeg said on her website. Part of what makes yarn bombing unique compared to its more conventional graffiti counterparts is its ability to be displayed on virtually any object or surface without causing permanent damage. Trees, lamp posts, traffic signs, benches and even bicycles are a few of the public structures commonly targeted by yarn bombers. Over the past decade, numerous organizations have been established worldwide for the sole purpose of reenergizing cold, sterile public spaces with knit and crochet adornments. One such group is Knit the City, which began in 2009 and is located in London. “Our squishy street art does many things. It takes a woolly hold on forgotten public spaces and gives them soul. It treats the whole world as an art gallery. It encourages others to bring their own city to life in ways only they can imagine,” said the organization on their website. No matter where or how elaborate the yarn bomb is, its unanimous purpose seems to be one of injecting life where it’s least expected and most needed. For many, the patchwork of bright colors and eye-catching patterns covering the bench on Arcadia’s green belt has achieved just that. Arcadia resident Emma May Beers regularly runs along the greenbelt, and said that the yarn-bombed bench has brightened up the area. “It adds color and is a fun change to the green belt,” Beers said.
