We were headed to San Diego for the annual Association of Free Community Papers conference. This year, with the conference being held just a quick flight away, our team was excited to attend for the first time as an entire group. The AFCP conference is a yearly event that includes classes, seminars and panel discussions to educate the thousands of small newspaper employees around the country who come together to discuss the industry and consider ways to keep up with an ever-changing readership. But it’s not all work, we always make time for a little fun. In each city where the conference is held, the AFCP organization does a terrific job of coordinating dinners and activities that put us in the shoes of a tourist, allowing attendees to let their hair down and see the sites and experience what the city has to offer. In San Diego, we were treated to a bit of the city’s culture by having dinner on the USS Midway. Voted the #1 Thing to Do in San Diego and the #1 Museum in San Diego by Trip Advisor, the USS Midway is a site to be seen. As the longest serving aircraft carrier of the 20th century, the Midway carried over 200,000 sailors over a span of 47 years, ending its reign in 1992. In June 2004, the Midway opened its doors as a military museum, displaying an extensive aircraft collection and a self-guided tour, which takes visitors into the officers’ quarters, the engine room, the galley and much more. The Midway is the most popular naval warship museum in the United States. In addition to tours and school field trips, the Midway hosts over 700 events each year. The AFCP Opening Reception put the Arcadia News team on the flight deck, inside the hanger bay and even aboard flight simulation planes that only our publisher, Greg Bruns, and our proofreader, Shirley Bruns, were brave enough to attempt. We all watched from outside the plane, on a grainy old television set, as the two experienced a flight mission. To those of us watching, it seemed similar to riding Star Tours at Disneyland. Bright and early the next morning, our team suited up in our Arcadia News T-shirts, ready to stake our claim in the front row of the 8 a.m. Best of the Best Awards ceremony. While we come to the AFCP conference for the education, everyone in attendance for the weekend knows this is the moment of anticipation. As the awards were announced, I looked down the row at our publisher each time our name was called. Hearing “ Arcadia News ” spoken alongside the words first place, second place, honorable mention, will never get old. While we aim to please our readers each month, being given awards by a professional board of journalism experts is like the cherry on top. The best moment, however, came at the end of the ceremony, as they announced the award for General Excellence. Arcadia News took first place. This award always means the most, because it is the overall excellence of our product. It signifies our hard work as a team. And our teamwork is what makes us the most proud. The rest of the weekend included a Mexican fiesta on Mission Bay, a fun photo booth and our team losing the Family Feud Championship in sudden death overtime. Mostly, though, we just kept talking about how excited we were to share our wins with the neighborhood. Arcadia is the community it is because of the camaraderie. Arcadia News is the paper it is because of the people we serve. Thank you for making us the most excellent monthly paper in the country! Arcadia News takes off for San Diego The Arcadia News team enjoyed happy hour on the flight deck of the USS Midway before taking part in a fun and festive photo booth. WHERE’S THE NEIGHBOR?
