There are the “What am I going to do with them all summer?” comments. I’ve also heard, “I’m shipping them off to Chicago to be with Grandma!” I’m currently holding steady with “I can’t wait to be free of lunchbox meal creation and homework helper duties for 2 1/2 months!” But ask me again in three weeks. I might be ready to pack a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and send them on their way. This year as I worked to prepare content for my third June edition as managing editor, I wanted to take our summer coverage to a new level. Yes, we usually feature travel inspired articles in June to prepare everyone for a summer of adventure and staycations. This year I wanted to get a little more creative, maybe take it up a notch. So, the Arcadia News team put our heads together and came up with a few extra ideas. Our June 2016 travel coverage has everything from Where to Eat in Yuma on page 27 (for all those travelers making the well-known trek to San Diego), to Roadside Oddities in Arizona on page 20. We have Kids Corner hitting the rails, making trains a major part of summer travel on page 17 and our Retirement, Now What columnist Jean Hodgson explains how to get the most out of a trip to Pennsylvania on page 38. We also take a look at the more obscure sites to see in San Diego this summer; rather than simply the landmarks we can all name by heart. Speaking of San Diego, our cover photo this month is the Arcadia News gang standing on the USS Midway in San Diego! The photo was taken during the Association of Free Community Papers conference in April, the night before we won the first place award in General Excellence, making us the most excellent monthly newspaper in the country!
