Page 27 June 2016 By Riley Kissee Each summer as the temperatures rise to triple digits, many of us here in Arcadia seek refuge in more pleasant climates, like that of San Diego. While it’s a quick five- hour drive to San Diego, half the fun is getting there. The perfect midway stopping point while making the trek on Interstate 8 is Yuma, Arizona. While Yuma is mostly known for its agriculture, not to mention the 3:10 afternoon train from the popular western film, there is more to Yuma than meets the eye. Here are several dining destinations for an enjoyable pit stop in Yuma. Prison Hill Brewing Company 278 S. Main St. – This trendy Yuma brewery has an industrial atmosphere and gourmet pub cuisine. While they do serve a selection of their own icy cold beers, each brewed in-house, they’re really known for their food. All of the menu items are served on sectioned metal plates. Highlights include the Smoked Meat Plate, a selection of two of their house-smoked meats; turkey, tri-tip, barbecue beef, brisket, pork or sausage. The What’s Your Poblano Man is a burger topped with poblano peppers, Pepper Jack cheese and crunchy tortilla strips. If you have room for dessert, try the IPA Cake, filled with a light honey mousse. Yuma’s Main Squeeze 251 Main St. – Looking for a light meal? At this wine bar they have an assortment of sharable plates to split with everyone in your traveling crew. They also have paninis, salads and artisan f latbreads. Plan on staying awhile? You can also enjoy a glass of wine from their winery, which uses grapes sourced from all over the world. Mariscos Mar Azul 1314 S. Fifth Ave. Suite 5 – Craving fresh seafood and tacos? Mariscos Mar Azul is the destination in Yuma for you. This Mexican restaurant has seafood chowders, shrimp, fish tacos, octopus, oysters, and of course, chips and guacamole. One of the most notable items on the menu is their Toritos, small peppers stuffed with shrimp and cheese, battered and fried to perfection. Mostly Muffins 2451 W. 16th St. – Need to satisfy your sweet tooth after being on the road for a few hours? Mostly Muffins is full of sweet treats that include homemade muffins (of course) as well as moist cupcakes, oversized cookies, chocolate-covered strawberries and granola bars. What’s more, they have a large selection of gluten-free baked goods as well. The Chile Pepper 1030 W. 24th St. – This place is a Yuma institution. It has been around since 1954 and there’s a reason for the longevity. While they have an assortment of breakfast burritos, tacos, hamburgers and enchiladas, nothing beats their classic bean and cheese burrito, an unofficial signature dish for the restaurant. Coffee Bean Espresso Bar & Cafe 2450 S. Fourth Ave. Suite 106 – No, this isn’t one location for the prominent chain of coffeehouses of the same name. Coffee Bean is a local Yuma coffee house, and while they serve up a great cup of joe, they’re also known for their smoothies and shakes. Ask for the Chocolate Espresso Shake, especially if you’re looking for something that’s equally refreshing as it is full of fuel for the drive home. Six special spots for your summertime Yuma pit stop
