An Arcadia resident, Keating was a standout runner at Arcadia High School from 2000-2004 before moving on to Indiana University to run on their track and cross-country teams. “Everyone liked Charles,” said Josh Olshan, Keating’s physical education teacher at AHS. “I never saw him without a smile or a laugh.” He recalled watching Keating grow at AHS, “I met him as a timid freshman, someone who was quiet and intimidated. But, before I knew it, he grew into the funny kid who always wanted to entertain people and make them happy.” Olshan told a story of Keating running a mile in boots and jeans in 5 minutes and 6 seconds, “He wouldn’t stop laughing the whole time he ran.” “I will remember Charles for a lot of things,” Olshan said. “He was a great kid with a lot of self-confidence.” Robert Reniewicki is the track and field coach at Arcadia High School and he coached Keating throughout his time at AHS. “Charlie was the kind of person who lit up a room when he entered,” Reniewicki said. Reniewicki said he was not shocked at all when he heard Keating wanted to join the SEALs, saying, “Charlie had always talked about being a Navy SEAL… It was a childhood dream.” Reniewicki said he learned a lot about Keating in their time together, but 9/11 was the most impactful moment he could remember. “After returning to school after morning practice on Sept. 11, 2001, we found out what had happened that morning,” Reniewicki said. “We were able to make it to my classroom to see the second tower fall.” Reniewicki continued, saying the events of 9/11 had a strong effect on Keating and his teammates. “After that morning, a lot of them began talking about doing something to help the country. This event really cemented becoming a Navy SEAL for him.” Elaine Boland, Keating’s aunt, lives in Virginia and wrote a letter to friends and family to notify them of her nephew’s untimely death. In it, she wrote: “On May 3, 2016, we received the phone call that my nephew, Charles H. Keating, IV, was killed in combat. He fought hard and he saved a lot of lives. Our family may never be the same, but we will always stand proud.” Boland continued, “My nephew, Tommy, couldn’t have said it better: ‘Charlie embodied that warrior in our family. He took on Evil, stared it right in the eye, and with that smile on his face he conquered the enemy. He was a true hero long before the events of May 3, 2016, but no one would have known because he was also humble, respectful, brave, strong, loving, and a little goofy, to be honest. Charlie had courage, honor, and dignity. He was an all around incredible human being who inspired and impacted the life of every person he met. Now that the world knows he is a hero, my hope is that they will never forget, because I know we won’t.’” Local hero remembered by his Arcadia teachers and family Navy SEAL Charles Keating IV was inspired to join the military after the events on 9/11.
