If it is an ischemic stroke, which occurs when a blood clot blocks an artery that supplies blood to the brain, a powerful drug may be given to dissolve the clot and restore blood flow. With this “clot- busting” medicine, patients may suffer little or no disability from their stroke. Clot-busting medicine must be given, in general, within three hours and in some instances up to 4 1/2 hours after the onset of stroke symptoms. Because it can cause bleeding, the drug cannot be given to patients if their stroke is caused by bleeding in the brain rather than a blood clot. A CT scan of the brain will tell the emergency room physician and neurologist whether the stroke was caused by a clot or bleeding in the brain. If additional treatment is needed or patients are beyond the three-hour timeframe, specialized procedures may be needed to remove the clot from the blocked blood vessel. For example, experts may choose to use a device that acts like a vacuum to remove a stroke-causing clot in certain patients. A stroke caused by bleeding after a blood vessel in the brain bursts is called a hemorrhagic stroke. These types of strokes often are treated by surgery to remove blood in the brain and repair damaged blood vessels. Identification of relevant risk factors and their aggressive reduction will decrease the chances of future episodes. Regardless of the cause, it’s important to seek medical attention at the first signs of a stroke.
