Page 53 May 2016 By Emily Balli Charros Future Teacher Scholarship winner and former Arcadia High School student Tessa Parker is enjoying her first year teaching at Tavan Elementary School. “I absolutely love teaching at Tavan and I feel very honored to be a part of this community,” Parker said. “The environment and diversity of this school is what originally drew me in [when I interviewed] and it’s still a huge reason why I love being here.” Parker went to AHS all four years of high school and graduated in 2010. Upon graduation, she was awarded the Scottsdale Charros Future Teacher Scholarship. “When I won the Charros Scholarship in high school, I had no idea that it would continue to be such a blessing and allow me to be an honored member of a community,” Parker said. With the scholarship, Parker went on to Northern Arizona University, where she pursued a degree in elementary and special education with a minor in Spanish. Parker graduated from NAU in 2014 and then taught first and second grade at Flagstaff Community Christian School for one year. Parker said she enjoyed teaching at a smaller school and getting to know the many parents who were involved. After meeting her husband at Flagstaff Community Christian School, the two decided to move from Flagstaff back to Arcadia to be closer to their families She started looking for a new teaching job in Phoenix and Arcadia, and decided that teaching first grade at Tavan was the perfect fit for her. “I interviewed with two elementary schools in the Scottsdale district and fell in love with the supervisors and environment at Tavan during my interview,” Parker said. “I never knew that I would come back to SUSD, but Margaret Serna and Julie Ballard made it clear how much they wanted me to be a part of the family here at Tavan.” Julie Ballard, assistant principal at Tavan, commented on what a positive inf luence Parker has had on the school. “She’s a fantastic teacher,” Ballard said. “She’s willing to learn, works extremely hard and is very, very invested in her students. She has a personal interest in knowing everything about her kids and making sure she’s providing the best education for them.” Parker said she has enjoyed her first year at Tavan because she’s not only teaching her students, but learning from them as well. Moving forward, Parker plans on completing her reading endorsement and pursuing a master’s degree in education. She also hopes to continue expanding her knowledge as a teacher by learning from her first-grade students and watching them grow. Parker said her favorite thing about teaching is appreciating each of them on a daily basis. “I truly enjoy being around them and encouraging them to explore learning and growing as individuals.” Alumna returns to teach Tessa Parker and her first-grade class.
