In 1916, Dr. Harry Wegeforth, a San Diego surgeon, heard a lion roar as he passed Balboa Park. The lion was from the 1915 Panama California Exposition. The encounter inspired the animal-loving Wegeforth to assume responsibility for the animals left at Balboa Park and open the San Diego Zoo. It also launched a 100-year revolution in animal care and wildlife conservation. Over the last century, the San Diego Zoo has grown to 100-acres and is home to nearly 4,000 rare and endangered animals representing more than 650 species and subspecies. It is also San Diego’s most popular tourist attraction, earning Trip Advisor’s 2015 Travelers’ Choice for No. 1 Zoo in the World. To celebrate its 100th birthday, the San Diego Zoo is hosting centennial festivities all summer long. Among the festivities will be a daily Centennial Celebration animal show featuring some of the zoo’s most beloved creatures. It also incorporates a video featuring 10 of the zoo’s greatest milestones. After each show, a birthday celebration featuring some of the zoo’s costumed characters such as Dr. Harry Lion, Bamboo Panda, Churchill P. Bear, Matilda Koala, and Kylie Kangaroo will perform on a gigantic birthday cake stage. Children will have the opportunity to dance with characters and learn the San Diego Zoo’s iconic jingle You Belong in the Zoo . The zoo will host a community celebration on May 14 in Balboa Park, complete with music, food and a group who will attempt to break a Guinness World Record. The festivities will even be incorporated into the zoo’s bus tours with a narrated ride that covers the majority of the zoo’s 100- acre grounds. Before boarding, guests will be invited to watch a presentation that highlights San Diego Zoo Global’s vision of leading the fight against extinction. Summer is the busiest time of year at the zoo, so plan ahead to make the most of your visit. That includes arriving 30 minutes before the park opens in order to snag a decent parking spot and place in line. You can also purchase special experiences in advance, from spending an early morning with pandas to a backstage pass that will allow you to experience the zoo’s animal ambassadors with their trainers. If you’re a AAA member, you can purchase special experiences or general admission passes and save up to $6 per ticket. “No matter when you come visit this summer, you’ll be part of the celebration,” said Rick Schwartz, ambassador for the San Diego Zoo, a zookeeper who has worked for the zoo for 15 years. For returning visitors, Schwartz suggests starting with the exhibit they liked the most last time to see how it has changed. If you’re visiting the zoo for the first time, he suggests using the zoo’s Plan Your Day tool to create an itinerary of animals and activities you don’t want to miss. “Our animals are most active in the early morning and evening, so come early and plan to stay all day long,” Schwartz said. That’s why it’s important to protect your identity as you prepare for your trip, and also while you’re traveling. Plan your trip carefully – It would be nice to think you can wander around and explore freely wherever you go, but that’s not always the case. Prep your home – Criminals who break into your home can do worse than simply take your belongings. They also can steal your identity if they find documents or electronics that contain sensitive information. Take steps to ensure it looks like you’re still at home. Put lights on a timer so they switch on automatically when it gets dark. Put a hold on all mail and newspaper delivery. Ask a trusted friend to water outside plants or bring in trash cans off the street. Secure important documents in a lockbox inside the house. Finally, turn off your home Wi-Fi network so no one can access your home systems while you’re away. Stay alert – You can have fun and relax, but maintain some degree of vigilance. Be aware of your surroundings as you sightsee or pass through airports or other busy areas. If you suspect your identity may have been compromised, check your credit report for signs such as new credit card accounts you didn’t open.
