This month, when I sat down with Amy Silverman, managing editor of the Phoenix New Times , an Arcadia native who now calls Tempe home, mother of two beautiful daughters, and author of a newly published book on motherhood, I’m not too proud to admit that I was feeling a bit lightheaded. “I do this for a living,” I told myself over and over again. “Just ask the questions, be friendly. Don’t gush.” I’m a bit of a geek who pretends to occasionally possess cool genes. I love words, writing and stories. The people who do these things well… well, they blow me away. Amy is one of those people. But she also turned out to be incredibly down to earth, funny and seriously cool. This month I introduce her book, My Heart Can’t Even Believe It as the May book choice for the Arcadia News Book Club. You’ll find her story and information about the book club meeting where she will be our guest speaker, on page 36. To me, May means Mother’s Day, Memorial Day and… Mexican food! Yes, that’s right, I’m a Southern California girl at heart and Cinco de Mayo ranks right up there on my list of favorite days of the entire year. Chips and salsa are my regular go-to snack and any day that provides an excuse for a fiesta is all right by me! Lucky for you, this month’s Arcadia Cookbook features Stephanie Estrada Heller who is whipping up an easy salsa recipe with her daughter, Alexa. That will get your Cinco de Mayo party started off right!
